Washington Post : Our largest driver of traffic is Matt Drudge
If this doesn't tell anyone that print media is dead.. or at least dying, then what will?
writers in better touch with their readers: "Everyone in our newsroom wants to be a blogger."And the blogs that pick apart every article that the Post produces are a good thing, said Downie, because they "keep the paper honest" and, even if their commentary isn't positive, bring people to the site.
"Blogs are not competitors and not problems," he said. "Instead we have a very interesting symbiotic relationship. Our largest driver of traffic is Matt Drudge."
Newspapers, Print Media, and soon to be TV are in the process of being replaced.
Think about it... Newspapers and Print Media are being slammed by Drudgereport, Google News, 1.5 billion blogs...
If Google Video and YouTube are nothing more than TV on your Computer... apple is building a device that allows you to 'beam your Video' to your normal TV .. in short this is a move that will cause serious ripples thoughout the economy and the media outlets.
Google Video, Youtube and others will do to the TV stations what Drudgereport and Google News have done to print media.
Feel free to disagree... but the evidence is overwhelming..

Do newspapers have a
Do newspapers have a future?

Not until they learn to break out of the box:

i have a lot of interest in this sphere - place blogging, citizen journalism, call it what you will. the media revolution continues... the paper i worked for flat out refuses to cover anything i'm doing, though. it's to their detriment, though...especially in the long tail long run...
I read Drudge often, but
I read Drudge often, but that doesn't mean that he actually has much content beyond his home page (which mostly links to articles on other sites). It's good for a quick scan of whatever Matt Drudge thinks is noteworthy, but it certainly isn't a full review of everything going on.
The Washington Post at the mercy of a balding mid 30 year old
The Washington Post should not be at the mercy of a 35 year old... with a hat and 1 page website.
:) Yeah, Founder. That's
:) Yeah, Founder. That's what I meant, though you've stated it more eloquently than I did.
But it does tell you that many people find a quick aggregate of current events useful.
What's wrong with a
What's wrong with a hat?
Drudge put Hollywood into beltway news, which was crying out for it at the time. Apparently it stuck pretty good.
It's not the hat :)
It's not the hat that is the problem...
it's the fact that a 200 year old company is at the mercy of the guy that wears that hat :)
Drudge is a black hat. And
Drudge is a black hat. And ruiner of this elaborate set of tubes we call the Internets.
And people complain
And people complain about getting Dugg and the load on a server. Try getting "drudged" and see what that will do to your server.
Drudge isn't a black hat. Being a black hat would indicate that he has something to do with SEO, right? He's more of a traditional marketer than a black hat--the whole site is more about links and passing traffic to other sites than it is about being search engine friendly.
does he still autoreload
his pages to inflate pageviews?
He's an old fashioned punk
It's not just that a great paper is subject to the whims of a guy with a hat, it's that the guy with the hat is a self-absorbed putz.
Uhhh..
Uhhh, it was a joke...
Server
Getting Drudged isn't as much fun as it sounds
