Yahoo! Partners with HP

HP and Yahoo! partnered in a deal to distribute the Yahoo! Toolbar on millions of HP computers:

The deal gives HP computer users instant access to Yahoo search, e-mail, news and finance links.

Effective immediately, Yahoo's home page will be featured on consumer PCs in Europe, Yahoo said in a statement. In North America, HP consumer PCs will come with an Internet browser toolbar that features links to Yahoo services, and Yahoo will be the preferred search service on the forthcoming Internet Explorer 7 browser.

Recently Yahoo! also won a distribution deal with Acer, a large Asian notebook provider.

With how inefficient Yahoo! Search is at monetizing traffic it is a bit perplexing how they can even afford to win large distribution partnerships.

2 obvious possible answers :

1) Anyone know about board membership crossovers between the players here? Personal connections are powerful drivers of business
2) Who knows how big a slice of the revenues they may have given away? Y may have signed a nearly 100% rev share deal just for the exposure. Google probably need to take at least some profit from these deals to keep their average figures up - they have a share price to support
