Diebold Voting Machine Hacked

In a paper posted on the university's Web site, Edward Felten and two graduate students described how they had tested a Diebold AccuVote-TS machine and quickly upload malicious programs and even developed a computer virus able to spread such programs between machines.

The whole thing should be handed over to the people that do casino (slot machine) network security.

Why waist the money. Those

Why --grammer police edit-- waste --end edit--- the money. Those things aren't even hooked to the web.

I'm sure the same crew could write a virus to make segways peel out and run into walls at random but since they don't connect to the www like these voting booths how the hell are they then vulnerable?

Actually I think they are...

Actually I think they are connected... I recall that is how they transmit the results of the tally's to some server...

At least as recent as 2003, they were running Windows CE as their OS ...

It's a small thing...

But I've seen this before by a couple of people and it drives me crazy.

"WASTE" how you spell it when you want to say "WASTE of time"

"WAIST" is the thing on your body between your hips and your chest.

grnidone you couldn't come

grnidone you couldn't come down the hall and smack me in the head and tell me to spell it right :P

LOL

LOL

Ya herb, I heard that on the radio coming to the office this morning. I guess to many security guards were getting bucked off those things while making their rounds.

It would be funny if it was a virus in the software.

Or maybe one of the software engineers was anti Bush and his little function made it into the mainstream version

Let's just go back to

Let's just go back to hanging chads.

Anything wrong with a bit of

Anything wrong with a bit of paper, a pencil and a large X ?

JasonD: not in my view --

JasonD: not in my view -- and much safer, too, given that there's a paper trail. Stuff happens with machines.

Um.. then how could anybody in Washington win? It would be impossible for any of our politicians to actually become President. Silly.

Isn't that the goal? Silly.

The KEY to Diebold

Talk about secure, it is being reported that the Diebold voting machine can be opened with a simple Hotel Bar Key, giving access to the memory and mother board. Now I know a several SEO's that just have to have several of these keys just lieing around...

Not to mention the virus that was planted on a Diebold Machine, without being hooked up to the web...

"Working directly with a Diebold AccuVote TS touch-screen voting system, the computer scientists have been able to implant a nearly-undetectable virus onto a touch-screen voting system, managing to successfully alter a voter's ballot"
&
"Edward W. Felten, a professor at Princeton's Department of Computer Science, the report confirms – and records in a video-taped demonstration – that such a malicious virus could be easily inserted onto a Diebold touch-screen voting system by a single individual "with just one or two minutes of unsupervised access to either the voting machine or the memory card" used with the system to store ballot definitions and vote tabulations."

Don't waste your time in the voting booth for just one vote... Hack the Vote... make sure your guy wins!
