Marissa Mayer tells TV not to worry about Google

Freaking Amazing... Google and Youtube have more Videos and Movies as well as great home videos than all the networks on TV have combined... their traffic has hit the roof...

Most SEO clients now want their commercials syndicated on Google Video or Youtube ... Some clients are building a TV commerical..without the TV. They want it on Google Video.. and they wants it to rank well in the Google Video Search.

The point is that Google and firms like Youtube are set to seriously take a big chunk outta the entire concept of TV as we know it.

They might not be brilliant storytellers, content creators, merchants, marketers or anything else for that matter ... but they sure want a piece of the action from everyone.

Wireless IPTV is on the not too distant horizon, the cable companies, satellitve TV and radio people should fear YouTube and Google about now that multiple disruptive technologies are available and starting to converge.

From the amount of rubbish programmes and reality big brother type tripe, I don't think they are brilliant storytellers or content creators either.

If I was them I would be worried, very worried.

Maybe Mayer is offering a strong hint about future cooperation as she neatly sidesteps the point. It's not about Google competing as programme makers etc, it's about people switching off TV altogether. It's not exactly a surprise that with the slew of multimedia, a zillion channels (admittedly mostly crap) and shops open 24/7, the yoof (and the rest of us) can find other things to do. Broadcasters ain't broadcasters any more. TV stations should concentrate on what they were traditionally good at, making quality programmes. Yes, 'stunts, spoofs and clips' can get millions of viewers, but how many times do you want to see them? The wealth of, say, the BBC is in its archive, which it can sell again and again, arguably through some narrow/broadcast medium that Google has a finger in. G's new venture is downloading classic books isn't it, not pdfs of some 12-year-old's blog; fast forward a few years and it could be classic TV, but they need the people to make it (and no, I don't think we'll be downloading vintage Big Brother in 20 years' time).
