YouTube better get bought out quick.

this deal is not just about placing videos on Google Video (with some being ad supported while others are for sale), but also about syndicating them to AdSense. Some low value high traffic sites might have just gained a nice revenue stream.

"Our technology takes MTV's video, marries it to an ad and shows it on a third site. No one's ever done this before," Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt said in an interview. "If this works, it would be a very large business for all players."

i'm surprised by the way google has handled google video. looks like they are going top down and going for the hits with this. i think the bigger opportunity is in going bottom up and fleshing out the long tail -- i.e. creating opportunities for independent video makers. presumably google knows this and is getting the hits in place so it is easier to build out the long tail (even though that wasnt how the adwords/adsense empire was built), although i think structurally and culturally, youtube is in a better position to mine the long tail.
