Shawn Hogan of Digital Point Battles the MPAA

This is an issue that has been going on in the background for a little while but now is getting some main stream press in Wired Magazine

Last November, Shawn Hogan received an unsettling call: A lawyer representing Universal Pictures and the Motion Picture Association of America informed the 30-year-old software developer that they were suing him for downloading Meet the Fockers over BitTorrent. Hogan was baffled. Not only does he deny the accusation, he says he already owned the film on DVD. The attorney said they would settle for $2,500. Hogan declined.

Hogan, who coded his way to millions as the CEO of Digital Point Solutions, is determined to change this. Though he expects to incur more than $100,000 in legal fees, he thinks it’s a small price to pay to challenge the MPAA’s tactics. "They’re completely abusing the system," Hogan says. "I would spend well into the millions on this."

I can't think of any organizations that are more out of touch with their customers than the MPAA and RIAA, give em' hell Shawn!

Well done that man. Got a Slashdot front page posting as well. Shame there was no link to DP.

Doesn't America have laws

Doesn't America have laws against threatening behaviour, especially over false allegations?

laws over threatening behavior

Oh we have plenty of laws, MrTurner. The problem is our legislaters and misrepresentatives are all lawyers, and they take funds from these institutions in exchange for supporting them.

We have a Code of Professional Conduct for lawyers that, if it were enforced, would cost a lawyer his license for using the judicial system in this way. There are many references to abusing the court system, one of them being "acting to undermine the public's confidence in the Bar". That's supposed to be a serious offense. Seriously funny is all it really is these days.

So funny

Shawn will eat them alive... this is so funny. They think they have gone up against some fool but don't know how calculating and smart Shawn is.

Good for him, he has the bank to fight it. Bad for them his voice is so loud.
