Thread Title:
Help-Stop-Smoking Site Rankings Drop Out Of Google - Non-Profit site - Please Help!
Thread Description:

In the post above a google engineer, GoogleGuy exposes a website that was stated as being a non-profit quit smoking site as a clumsy blackhat affiliate fraud.

It's the funniest thing i've seen in a very long time and there is much to learn from it. First, here's choice quote:

Interesting, I didn't realize that SEW was okay with people posting specifics. bobmutch, you're saying that quitsmokingsupport.com is a non-profit site? Here's what I see when I look. Last time I checked, I saw dozens of links to quit-smoking-quitting-smoking-stop-smoking.com. Oh look, from quit-smoking-quitting-smoking-stop-smoking.com, I'm able to take care of my other health needs, from friendly vendors such as pheromones-perfume-cologne-attract-woman-man-human-androsterone.com,
attract-woman-man-androsterone-human-pheromone-perfume-cologne.com,
better-orgasms-sexual-dysfunction-libido-enhancement-enhancer.com, and of course diet-pills-natural-fast-weight-loss-supplements-fat-product.com.
That's quite a bit of help.

ROFLMFAO!

He also goes on to point out that the website in question, for a "non profit" is linking out to a whole stack of blackhat agressive affilate scum sites... and that on at least one of them, it's easy to spot some very amateur hidden links using CSS.

So, what can we learn from this?

  • Dont post your sites on forums - well, duh...
  • Sites you link to can affect your rankings - well, duh...
  • Google aren't stupid - well, duh...
  • Think before you post - well, duh...

That one has made my week, it's an absolutely corking thread - killer funny!

lol! That one topic is well worth the donation I made to Threadwatch.org. Nick, keep it up! How anyone stating that they do SEO would have missed that one is a little beyond my comprehension. ;)

hair shirt and flaggelation posters

What a great thread

These guys who make the orginal postings about why their site is not in Google/DMOZ/anywhereelse seem either to have a screw loose in assuming that people at the other end are daft, or fail to comprehend tht drawing attention to themselves is counter productive.

Resource Zone is a live action run of hair shirt masochists wanting to know why they are not included, and hence throw themselves to the public humiliation from (power mad) DMOZ editors

From a Google employee that is, I must say, a truly great post. As one who is not in the camp of awe at every pronouncement that GG makes (sorry!) this is a wonderful put down of a whinger.

Maybe they should have a "Google Zone" where those of a similar desire to commit hari kari in public can avail themselves of the opportunity.

Hmm.

It's definitely possible that this is a non-profit site; I certainly did not "expose a non-profit site as a fraud." For example, there's lots of actual content about stopping smoking on that site. The thing to bear in mind is that the original site is linking so much to bad sites that it's not a surprise that the original site's reputation is affected.

But if the site stops associating itself with spam like that and files a reinclusion request, I wouldn't be at all surprised for it to be reincluded.

>But if the site stops associ

>But if the site stops associating itself with spam like that and files a reinclusion request, I wouldn't be at all surprised for it to be reincluded.

So hand exclusions require reinclusion requests, whereas algorithmic exclusions do not...

I hate being rude to people so I'm going to try my very best not to, which entails biting my tongue real hard.

To this end a simple question stems forth, does anyone ( with the exception of Mr GG) actually believe that spam is detected on a regular basis via algorithmic means? Or is all just BS and bollox, and they the (SE's) rely on good ol human beans and spam reports to weedle it out?

AW hell, GG, quit being so po

AW hell, GG, quit being so polite.

>I certainly did not "expose a non-profit site as a fraud."

No, you didn't. But I'll buy you lunch if that site files a 990 tax return.

Lunch

Watch out rc, I can see GG ordering:

Sweet Potato Jalapeno Bisque with corn.

Tortellini Primavera salad organic tortellini mixed with organic zucchini, yellow squash, tomato sweet peas, pesto vinaigrette.

Organic Tofu Mushroom Ragout domestic and wild mushrooms, vegetable stock, leeks and tomatoes

And 4 very dry martinis.

Oh goodie, time to throw in what remains my favorite quote of 2004 on this subject, yet again!: Webguerrilla on algorithmic spam detection

Exposes Site as Fraud?

Nick: I think you have jumped the gun on this one. The only thing that Blair did wrong was link to a bad neighbourhood. I think your reporting needs a bit of a tune up. But then again you can't be expected to get it right every time. As far has not posting it on the forums there was no loose for GG to find the post and answer it. The penalty was already in.

Probably the thread title shouldn't have said "Not-Profit" as that could be read as a bit misleading and no it doesn't file a 990 tax return rcjordan.

As far as your comment pageoneresults I agree. I should have caught that. Blair emailed me and then phone me and wanted some free help. I took a quite look at it and then posted and really didn't spend all that much time on it, but still no excuse I should have picked that one up as easy as pie. Just a matter of looking at the a couple of the links. Live and learn.

>the only thing

>the only thing

Oh, please! Hell, if GG is reporting it as he found it, that site was stuffed AND w/ a hidden div. They thought they knew what they were doing --and it wasn't about giving up cigarettes.

"Oh look, from quit-smoking-quitting-smoking-stop-smoking.com, I'm able to take care of my other health needs, from friendly vendors such as pheromones-perfume-cologne-attract-woman-man-human-androsterone.com,

and didnt you say

...that this guy, blair, owned at least 2 of the domains he was linking to?

Really bob, Threadwatch is full to the brim with affiliate types and, some very good ones at that. The spin you're trying to give this is admirable, but misplaced amongst seasoned, battle scarred marketers :)

The worst thing in this is that all of those sites, whether owned by blair or not, are now dead in the water, the whole shady network is now pooof! Over one forum post.

A lesson for anyone new to the game i think...

As a recent smoking quitter

[9 days and counting]

I've surfed a lot of sites, its clear the reason that site exsists and it ain't not to make a profit.

To be honest I'm just a little angry, its setups like that give the quality spammers a bad name.

>blair

A webmaster/SEO needs to choose their friends very carefully, imho.

Quitter!

Ha! So I'm not the only one who decided enough was enough after the weekend?!

>A lesson for anyone new to t

>A lesson for anyone new to the game i think..

Oh, here I get to work in a favorite quote as sorta related to the outing of sites (though that wasn't the original context):

"Put the keyboard down and slowly back away from the computer and nobody gets hurt."

(For the record, many/most? of us here do not think that forums should allow specifics.)

>[9 days and counting] con

>[9 days and counting]

congrats NFFC

It sure looks like Blair hook

It sure looks like Blair hooked up with TP1P. And, that network was probably already banned by Google as they are older TP1P campaigns using their previous onmouseover tricks.

On a side note, how do we really know that bobmutch is working with Blair? What if bobmutch is a competitor of Blair and just wiped him out with that one post at SEW? It happens all the time and is one of the main reasons why you won't see URIs allowed at certain fora.

Specifics

>>many/most? of us here do not think that forums should allow specifics

You can of course add me to that. Ive tried to explain the idea but it doesn't seem to go across very well, ive given up trying...

Some places allow it, some dont. Some places have this kind of thing happen, some dont - as far as TW is concerned, i'd like to be part of the "some dont" camp thanks :)

NFFC - bet you not drinking either

I knew when he sobered up he would forget me ...... lol

No AIM, No Calls, No christmas card ( well that would be too Gay )

DaveN

Dead over one forum post - garbage!

Nick: There was a penalty before the post. If blair had a penalty so did the other sites. So I have no problem with the post. Blair asked me to take a look at his site for free, I quickly checked it out, didn't take the time to look far enough to see the problem and posted it on the SEW for him so that others could offer him some help and when on with my business.

rcjordan: "Oh, please! Hell, if GG is reporting it as he found it, that site was stuffed AND w/ a hidden div." That was the other sites not Blairs. You may want to do a re-read on the thread.

Nick: "that this guy, blair, owned at least 2 of the domains he was linking to?" No Nick I said he own one of the sites he was linked other than that one that got the ban. Neither of those 2 sites were spammy but both were linked to spammy sites. Again if you are going to be reporting on this kind of stuff you may need to slow down and read a bit closer and get it right. I pointed out to your once aready that you mis-reported and you are still on the same vein. No one will get it right everytime but I am suprised after it has being pointed out that you made a wrong judgement you not only didn't corrected it but you are stil making statements that seem to show you have still not done your home work on this one.

pageoneresults: Blair didn't get wiped out by with post on SEW? Blair all ready had his Rankings hammered. What did happen is Blair found out what was wrong is in the process of correcting it and when he has straighten out his links it should get an reinclusion.
