News from SEW that Google are supporting NOODP Tag

Not a lot more to say, so if you have a bad ODP title and Google use it, go to zapping it now.

WHOO HOO!!!

Obvious Question

So if Google is acknowledging the fact that ODP titles may bad/false/invalid/manipulated why even bother to value the links from it?

It seems to me that the

It seems to me that the Google/DMOZ link is getting weaker. No doubt they will be counting the use of this tag, which may speed up the process. Google has always been one to land on the side of popular opinion.

So get it in your pages - remember - say no to ODP ;)

<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOODP">
<META NAME="msnbot" CONTENT="NOODP">
<META NAME="googlebot" CONTENT="NOODP">

Why?

You can treat this tag as a flag on your site that says to Google "Look Ma! I'm SEO'ing my site!'. And dmoz could do the same thing. It wouldn't surprise me to see in some of the dirtier ODP categories that sites with this tag find they've lost their listing.

out with ODP

Corruption stories aside DMOZ is still a bunch of @rse

What will take it's place though, maybe a web 2.0 version with some sort of digg style rating?

I can see what you're saying

I can see what you're saying Wheel but this is a problem that affects loads of businesses. Bad ODP titles in the SERPs is a level of marketing that anybody can understand. I've had to explain to countless clients that "no, I can't change your title, yes we can try asking DMOZ but frankly there is more chance of Bush finding WMD in Iraq"...

I doubt ODP would want to retaliate to this, after all this tag was introduced by the SEs. That would bring a new wave of bad publicity their way and really set the debate up.

What will take it's place

What will take it's place though

Why do we need something to take it's place? It can just be another directory site, no more no less. Lets face it, they don't have any users. Maybe it's the categories, but I struggle to find a single referral on any of my included sites.

Use of No ODP tags for www.divorce-online.co.uk

We recently have been having problems with google using the ODP title as our title for the serps.

I have followed the advice and hey presto out title reverted to our own title tag. However when I search on google.co.uk in the web results we continue to appear at No.2 position for keyword divorce but when I click UK only, we have dissapeared from the results for that keyword which is worrying. I have removed the No ODP tags in case this is why. it is doing this on IP address 64.233.183.104 but on other PC's in the building with different ISP's it is not a problem.

Any ideas?

First I would download the

First I would download the ShowIP plugin for FF - that will let you know which Google datacentre you are on. If the other PC's are on a different ISP then there maybe some caching going on but it would help to determine if this is a quirk or an update for your site (you can type the IP directly into the browser on the other machines of course).

You're still No.2 on both searches here

Datacentre checking tools can be useful but I've not found a UK-centric one yet (anyone?). I wouldn't worry too much though unless you can find the same thing happening at a few DCs.
