The 4.5 minute wait is part of the marketing plan. Shows how busy and important the site is.

To compare MySpace to just Yahoo! email is quite arbitrary in nature. The Hitwise announcement is an ad for the Hitwise service in disguise.

Should Hitwise data be taken with a pinch of salt then?

Well clearly in this case they are selling a skewed story that lead to this thread spreading an inaccurate story (they only compared myspace to part of the yahoo network), but most of the market tracking companies do the same things. Hitwise has been a bit more agressive with the biased press release as legit content on other sites marketing angle recently. How agressively they market may not have much to do with the quality of their data, and as they push for further authority by manufacturing content stories it may get them greater exposure, it may undermine their brand a bit, or both.

Ah, now i've actually RTFA I understand - they're saying mail.yahoo.com is different to Yahoo.com, which is the only way myspace is the top Domain.

the 4 min wait isnt typical... they are having some issues more than usual. something is up over there. I'd chalk it up to growing pains... on the 2nd of this month they broke 90M users... in the last 10 days they added another 2.5M to that number... they are growing out of their socks.

Hitwise figures are quite accurate, but you do have to watch that they compare like to like. The domain yahoo.com covers a hell of a lot, and it's reasonable to break it up into chunks - we think of Yahoo US and UK as separate, even though technically the UK site is simply a sub-domain of the .com. Just read what they say carefully, as you should with any press release

Have Myspace fixed the chat yet? It's been broken ever since I went there.

Seems there's gold to be found in myspace. Haven't seen too many sites optimize for anything, so it's almost like the old west. Throw up some new content on your myspace related site ( not a myspace account) and voila 2 or 3 days later you're ranking for whatever it is you want to rank for. Almost like the old days of 2000-2001.

well, I actually came in here on Dave's suggestion to point you all over to Danny's Padded Room where I am having a heated discussion with myself on a related subject... but either the stories need to be approved first, or mine didn't get through, so I was just waiting to see what happened before I tried again... I never got to a thank you page, just pushed back out to index, and so I'm not real confident I did anything other than just confuse myself, but that is nothing new....

T.T. too much to talk about in this little thread, but I'm thinking about Copenhagen in the fall... maybe I'll buy you a beer there?:) Short story is {gulp} I hate to say it, but I'm down to 1 from 30+ last year.
