Old Mods Don't Die, They Just Fade Away
Its the weekend, so something for anyone at a loose end to think about. My thought was promted by Heather's post in her thread earlier this week
I was a mod at WmW for years. Guess I didn't make that much of an impact.
Many TW readers, like me, have been on the web 10 years or more. People come and people go. There is a certain element of "famous for 15 minutes" about the web.
When, God help us, DMOZ was important, there were Metas there that held (briefly) enormous power. Laisa and that private eye guy that blocked whole cats. NetEsq and his spat with DMOZ.
There was a whole host of mods at WMW that resigned for various reasons over the years. Some are still around, others have (maybe) faded away
Then there was a guy called Nick_W who started TW :-)
Anyone with thoughts on "where are they now", maybe we can dredge some out of retirement, or to reply from their yacht in the Mediterraneran.

most of the old mods from WMW are here at TW cornwall, they might not post as often but they are still around lurking and turn up at the seoroadshow annual meeting, which was started by ex wmw admins and mods
I saw NickW in Scotchland
I saw NickW in Scotchland but he didn't see me. [so BAD]
Laisha is in Maine with her meta husband Ken Anderson.
Netesq [aka David] is dead I hope but maybe not http://groups.yahoo.com/group/xodp/

Yeah this place is lousy with good, former SEF and/or WmW mods: DianeV, bobking (aka massa), rcjordan, mackin, NFFC, TallTroll and a whole gaggle of others to numerous to mention. hehehe
Part of the good mix of old timers and new folks here at TW.
Not missing Netesq tho.
As Brad says. I always
As Brad says. I always thought this was a great place for everyone to hang out; a neutral zone started by old CSS Nick from WMW -- rather than a team clubhouse fraught with old politics/loyalties -- where people could get to know each other if they didn't already. Excellent; I was actually excited when I first saw TW; Nick does come up with good ideas.
Now, what's this about a DMOZ private eye guy?
I talk to Laisha every
I talk to Laisha every couple of months. She is a good friend of mine who is *so* busy all the time. Her husband is running for a representative seat in Maine.
I also talk to Marcela DeVivo aka 2_Much. She is expecting her first child in August.
I think David (can't think of his nick atm) talks to Dennis aka Toolman every once in a while. I miss Dennis a lot, and I'd like to get in touch with him. He basically left the world of SEO and is now buying and selling stocks...at least htat was the last I heard.
I've always been impressed that DianeV chooses to spend her time here. I knew of her waaay back in Jim's days. She is a class act.
Thanks, grnidone. I'm sure
Thanks, grnidone. I'm sure I'm not as exciting as all that -- but I remember you too from 1999-ish. It's good to get to know everyone here.
I wish I had been around in
I wish I had been around in the earlier wmw days, and participated more once I was too. I feel like I missed out on a lot.
earlier wmw days
It certainly was different for the first couple of years. The irony was that it was started and propagated by a small group who got tired of the rigidity of SEF. That's almost humorous now.
BTW, in my opinion the one person who did the most to build that place up in its first few years was Rcjordan -- back when it had sparkle.
Most of the old mods and admins that I know are still on the web, and doing better than ever, but are a lot less vocal today. Also, the cowboy day are over for the most part. We are into the era of the skyscrapers.
WmW days
I agree, RC did a lot for the WmW community. Glad to see so many from there posting here.
Littleman's posts were always worth reading then and still are.
In the beginning, the
In the beginning, the difference between WmW and Jim's was that WmW was fun and the peopel were nice. Very open. In fact, that's why Brett started WmW: he got flamed at SEF and was sick of it.
Same with Threadwatch, except put "Nick" in place of Brett and WmW in place of SEF.
Everything old is new again.
where are they now
Mainly plotting and conspiring, think of us as a digital illuminati. Here is a pic of our last super secret meeting.
That's a mighty fine posse
That's a mighty fine posse of hotties you have there, NFFC.
