How Does Google Work? The Press Has No Clue

SEO Training.

The LA Times published what amounts to a rant article about Google's secrecy:

Schmidt said he relied on a team of engineers with a background in physics to calculate how the company was performing from financial, technological and operational standpoints. The Google system is such "a complex box," Schmidt said, that when he wants an update, "I have to have a one-hour meeting with the physicists to get it all right."

I wonder how many of those meetings they do each month? And why they are only an hour if it is that complex.

Physicists?

Did he really say physicists? Is that what they are?

Who needs economists these days eh..

"Schmidt said he relied on a team of engineers with a background in physics to calculate how the company was performing from financial, technological and operational standpoints."

sounds like

a good defense argument.

Lost in translation

I don't know if Google actually has any physicists on the payroll although it wouldn't surprise me if they did. However letting the physicists do the finances, I hope something got lost in translation, sounds an awful lot like going to the nearest shaman to solve your medical problems.

As a physicist..

..I did blanch at the finance bit as well.

Mind you I have sucessfully managed the finances of my own businesses for years. So us physicists may not be as daft as GW thinks.

Not Daft

I don't think you boys are daft, and that there isn't some carryover value, I think it's a expertise and perception issue. Steve Jobs, Simon Cowell or even Arnold Schwarzenegger can make suggestions about improving financial stability of the global economy and people will kind of scratch their heads and look at them the way a cat looks at you when you tell it to do something. However if Alan Greenspan says the exact same thing people will sit up and take notice.

Run by physicists...

Well it would explain why they sold off their shares in Pi - or those Golden Triangle rumors...

Did a Physicist Come Up with This

I just did a genuine search, not playing SEOs or trying to find fault
The search was

outing prominant sites again tsk tsk

shame shame. Anyway....

Someday the world will wake up, but it might take comical proportions to cause that. I consider this comical, but then I have a good deal of graduate training in physics and (more importantly) the mathematics of the modern sciences.

That's what makes it comical to me.... he probably meant to imply they have analytical skills and tools. Instead he said they are physicists. No offense cornwall, but run some personality profiles on those gifted analytical thinkers who choose physics as their trade, compared to those with the same talent, education and training, but who choose economics or engineering or mathematics or medicine or even comparative literature. Do we still pick physicists to run the company numbers and advise the CEO of one of the largest public companies???
