Google's Marissa Mayer Interviewed
The German web site Spiegel has an interview with Marissa Mayer. If you don't know any German, Google Blogoscoped has published the key points of the interview in English.
Some key quotes from Google Blogoscoped:
Marissa says Google is spending a great deal of their time battling spammy link farms. She says naturally, Google’s algorithms analyze whether or not all links are from the same site. She also admits that there’s no defense against Googlebombing, as the linking network can be very widespread. “It’s enormously difficult to differentiate between an act of manipulation and a relevant result; for example, when a company introduced a new product with a fantasy name.”
And then
Asked about an Ask Jeeves feature which allows you to narrow a search by clustered topics, Marissa answers: “Do you want to know what I really think of this? It’s interesting, but not really useful.” She adds that the majority of users don’t really want to narrow their search, they want an instant answer, and that for those users Google gives the fastest results.

Sometimes true
>>The majority of users don’t really want to narrow their search, they want an instant answer, and that for those users Google gives the fastest results.
If Google gives them what they're looking for on the first SERP, that's true, but when it doesn't you'd think they'd prefer some options rather than having to come up with a more specific search themselves.
Rarely useful
I have to agree Marissa. I would never use such an option. She is using the example "Jaguar". It shouldn´t be a problem for the average user to do a second search for "Jaguar car" or "Jaguar animal". The time saving through such an option is to low.
...and that for those users Google gives the fastest results
Right..
Until I have to scroll down or click on the second page because they take away three results to place three other results for some other search that has nothing to do with what I'm looking for. I'd rather have three suggested search phrases located in a small bar at the top instead of having the results I'm looking for split apart with some other crap.
"She adds that the majority of users don’t really want to narrow their search"
equals...
We don't want people to narrow their search and click adwords ads that don't pay as much as those big money phrases??
Waiting for GrayHatNews' report...
I'm sure when Gurtie and Chris get back from Brazil, they'll have a field day with this one!
who, us?
we never take the piss out of Marissa! Besides which, we're having too much fun with H-Man (Saviour of the InterWeb) at the moment.....
Actually I'm sure
is a direct contradiction of some Googlespeak I've seen somewhere, probably either in an interview with Eric or on Matts FAQ. Anyone remember where?
