Google 'Planning Total Storage'

A BBC report says that a blogger spotted notes in a slideshow presentation wrongly published on Google's website. Apparently Google is planning a massive online storage facility to store all users files. "We deleted the slide notes because they were not intended for publication," Google spokeswoman Lynn Fox said."

Quote:
In the notes, chief executive Eric Schmidt reportedly said Google's aim was to "store 100%" of users' information.

The notes said: "With infinite storage, we can house all user files, including e-mails, web history, pictures, bookmarks, etc; and make it accessible from anywhere (any device, any platform, etc)."

Something not just for Google, but for perhaps the US government to read, analyse and do whatever with. Sort of scary, eh?

In your title, I think you meant 'world domination' when you typed 'storage'.

The surprise would be if

The surprise would be if anyone's surprised - surely this is just a case of the mainstream finally figuring what we always figured was happening?

Interesting reactions at the BBC comments page, though - almost looks like Threadwatch. ;)

Scotsman article plays the (dog's-eared) privacy card

"While offering more convenient access to data, the service will stoke debate about the dangers of storing so much personal data on Google systems."

Privacy fear as Google plans 'super database'

Now wait a minute, I think it's fair to say that if you're dumb enough to put sensitive data on someone else's servers then you deserve whatever happens to you.

already registered

Looks like gdrive.com and g-drive.com are already registered. Not that, uuuh, I looked or anything.

thread title suggestion

Google 'Planning Total OUTAGE'

now whether you interpret "outage" as in "outing someone" or "total failure to supply services" is up to you.

a popcorn moment

It'll be fun seeing the 'temporarily closed' sign go up on that, and considering how glitchy my gmail is getting at the moment (suddenly delivering me messages which it tells me were sent 16 hours before and currently giving me cute "oops try again in a minute" messages for the third time this week) I think I'll wait for someone else to try it first :)
