Rumor: Lycos Sheds Search Staff
John says multiple sources told him Lycos laid off their search staff. Apparently it looks as though they thought another layer of paid ads underneath the AdWords ads did a good enough job on the relevancy front.
Lycos also recently sold Quote.com to Interactive Data Corp. for $30 million.

I think the biggest surprise
I think the biggest surprise here is that Lycos had a search staff...

Could've fooled my log files...
Sounds like a blood bath @ Lycos

What Lycos Does
Back in the DOT COM bubble days I think they were a Yahoo wannabe, like Excite, but they too never got enough momentum to reach critical mass best I could tell.
Today they just occupy a bunch of office space that would be best utilized letting the homeless sleep there instead.
A Shame
but definitely expected. We're going to see a lot more middle market casulaties over the next year. There were some really cool folks at Lycos too.
There were some really cool
If they were excited about their jobs and talented I am not sure how they could have stayed at Lycos so long with MSN, Y!, Ask and Google in the game.

In Scandinavia (Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland) they own a few pretty large portals in terms of audience, don't really know about the rest of the world. Even though their share here is high, these countries are only a very small fraction of world population.
As for "what", they run Yahoo-type portals here, and they're usually much larger than Yahoo.
If all they are going to do
If all they are going to do for search is import the Ask feed then they probably don't need much staff. However, Lycos does have their own discussions search which is pretty interesting.
It sounds like Daum is giving up, but maybe they are going to focus more on the portal aspects instead of search.
I had kind of hoped for more innovation after Daum bought them.
>Scandinavia
I think those are separately owned. Daum only bought the US based Lycos.com portal.
F'd Company
Wow, forget Lycos, F'd Company still exists?
Although, I suspect they'll be busy over the next year or two as our latest little bubble starts a'burstin'
