Privacy is Only an Illusion
The NYT is running an article about how we are giving away privacy to technology, and that our biggest fears should include marketers:
On the one hand, most of us will trade in our anonymity and privacy for, yes, increased national security and cleaner, healthier, easier lives. On the other hand, we will be more vulnerable - not only to malicious hackers and identity thieves but also to sophisticated marketers.
A similar article, more heavily focused on search, was recently posted in Slate.

Took Them A Long Time
Finally getting around to privacy as an illusion eh? Think it was first mentioned about the time social security cards were issued. Or some cave-dweller wandered past someone else's cave during an intimate moment...
The #1 threat to privacy is that people are lazy. They won't take advantage of protections that are currently available. What they want to do is complain about how the government, someone else, anyone else, is bending them over. The truth is, they bent over of their own accord, stuck a sign on their ass that said, "Do Me Hard", then wonder of wonders, they were surprised to find that while naked, bent over with a sign on their ass that said, "Do Me Hard", that they were done, hard.
On top of that, now they want the same governments that took advantage of them while they were bent over, to protect them. Irony anyone?
