They may need 1
Most of the time, I'm not a fan of a the "we're a different culture, so we need it different X" mentality. However, because of the character set in Japanese writing and the difficulty in typing in queries, the Japanese tend to search much deeper on a given query than anyone other culture in the world.
all good
Countries building their own search engines will result in more research and innovation, which in the long term should give us better search, whoever we use.
Google, Y!, MSN, etc will also have to dedicate more and more time and money to keeping their share of these countries by producing better local services and content. More choice is always good for the end user.
Frankly, I am surprised this
Frankly, I am surprised this has taken so long to come about. But I didn't think Japan would be the first Asian country to have their own search engine, I thought sure it'd be South Korea.
