Now if they were to swap the left and right columns and put the ads on left I bet we'd have a significant growth in earnings

If they did swap the columns as graywolf suggests, their income would likely go up substantially as well. I don't think they'd make that substantial of a change to their UI though, as nice as it might be. I think such a substantial shift would potentially marginalize them as a SE.
