Forget about ultra high speed broadband in the UK..
The BBC comments on a report by broadband market research group Point Topic that the so-called ADSL2+ is being oversold with claims of delivering speeds of up to 24 megabits per second to users in the UK.
According to them only 5% of the population will be able to receive even 18Mb.
And half the population will have to settle for speeds under 8Mb.
As you probably know the speed of delivery get depends on how far you live from your local telephone exchange. And the problems lie in the length of the copper loop between the telephone exchange and your home. The UK has comparatively few exchanges, and the local copper loops are relatively long.
The report ends on the cheery note
"24Mb is achievable within 300 meters of the exchange so basically you can get those speeds if you happen to live next door to a telephone exchange"
Optical fibre and satellite are different ball games, this applies to copper cables.

seems like yesterday I was
seems like yesterday I was overjoyed with 192kb/s
"overjoyed with 192kb/s"
That was probably back in 1981 when Bill Gates said, "640K [of RAM] ought to be enough for anybody."
Does the UK...
...really still use copper wires??? {shocked}
what's wrong
what's wrong with copper? it's stood the test of time :P
i should be getting 10mb dsl
i should be getting 10mb dsl from blueyonder early next year, which sounds good but some friends in Sweeden had 10mb about 5 years ago
I had 2mbs at my last house,
I had 2mbs at my last house, but can only get 1 here, any more makes the connection so loose it's not worth the hassle
funny, when i went from dialup to bb, i couldnt beleive the speed, now i think my connection sucks...
Heh
It needs to both suck and blow, otherwise your data traffic will only go one way ;O)
