UK Search Engine on eBay

Alistair McIntyre emailed me to say that his UK Search engine UKWizz has been put up for auction on eBay

There are about 13M pages in that index, so it may interest some of you guys...

$15,000 starting bid...

...somewhat low for the work that I'm sure has gone into this over the past couple of years. Hope it does a fair bit better than that.

Got to agree with Adam on

Got to agree with Adam on that one. Best of luck with the sale Mack (do I get to still be a cool site? :P)

Anyone know why Mack is

Anyone know why Mack is selling? Good luck M8!

Ah

UKWizz was launched as a personal Project by the site owner just over 18 months ago to see if it was possible to actually run a large scale UK search engine. The entire project was designed to be as cost effective to operate as possible. UKWizz is now the 2nd largest UK search engine in terms of index size. The project has however reached the stage where, if it is to continue to grow, it would be in a better position to do so in someone else's care. I have been working on UKWizz in my spare time since it was launched.

Scott looks like your already religated to the "where are they now" list ;)

hmm

Just ran some searches to see how many indexed pages it had on some bigger UK sites and these results were simply appalling, no compliments from me unfortunately

hmm, 2

The directory part of the site, even though they may not have been focusing on it, is appalling too.

$15K??? Maybe keep the servers, sell the software and DB for $1K-$2K if there is substantial programming and documentation behind it.

Sad - it doesn't even seem

Sad - it doesn't even seem to recognise some UK sites as being UK sites :(

Index size

"Sad - it doesn't even seem to recognise some UK sites as being UK sites"

There is a difference between not recognising a site as a UK site, and not having indexed it yet. The index needs to grow a lot before it can truely deliver great results.

What you see in the index just now could still be classed as a "seed index" what I have done so far is try and index as many importaint sites as possible. For example try a search for "university".

As the bot continues to index the "vital" sites it gradualy moves out to index as many other sites as possible. It all boils down to bandwidth.

Mack.

Ukwizz for sale .. hmmm

tell you what, I might have a punt on this one .. and I would pay more than $15,000 for it now ! ...

DaveN

"sell the software and DB for $1K-$2K if there is substantial programming and documentation behind it." and I will take you up on that StephenBauer... If you think that no effort is involved in building a spidering and indexing search App you are a fool, but hey deliver 13 million indexed pages with the ability to grow and I will drop you the 1-2k .. of course I would need substantial programming and documentation behind it.

But I guess it comes down to people respecting how much work is actually involved in a Product .. I sold a domain name for 3 times the 1-2k price you think ukwizz is worth ... what effort was involved zero !!
