The Big Database of
The Big Database of Everything. There are all kinds of implications here. I don't think I'd want to be a small, freelance database programmer right now -- for example, one who caters to small, independent car dealers, or maybe real estate agents, etc.
OTOH, aren't we about due for a big dustup over G's privacy policies? It's been a few months since the last outcry......
I think this is an
I think this is an inflection point for Google and:
1) It could go really, really badly for their competition.
or
2) The whole "be everything to everyone" thing that never works in the tech/internet world which requires acute core competency is going to backfire badly on them.
Just wanted to be on the record for both sides of the coin :)
ok so...
how the hell do you get in? login screen just keeps cycling back up even tho my gmail login and password are correct....what am I missing?

It's certainly a very pivotol point for them SB, it'll be amazing to watch. At least I hope so, you can never really tell if it's one of those releases they'll quietly sweep under the carpet, or one that will change everything...

I think the login is broken on purpose. "Look, but don't touch."

Is this just some crude mock
Is this just some crude mock up to test the industries reaction? looks like someone spent all of 30 seconds on the user interface which kept trying to undo what i entered. Where's the usual beta logo?
Crude mock up: Well,
Crude mock up:
Well, according to CNN, this 'leaked' out. Yeah, right.
I don't doubt they want to see what people will say about it. You'd think that after CNN posted it, if they really didn't want people to find out about it, they'd pull it. So, I think 'testing the industries action' is exactly what they want to do. Google isn't stupid enough to 'leak' anything they don't want people to see.
yeah, that'd be like when
yeah, that'd be like when the "forgot" to put ads on GNews right heather....
that's what's so infruriating about google, they continually insult the world's intelligence.
And as for CNN, well those dumb fuckers just made that up, clearly.

Imagine if Microsoft did a release like this all the negative press they would get.
Item expiration date cannot
Item expiration date cannot exceed 31 days ?
After that, moved to "inactive items" list. Deleted from search index?
wtf?
no access here, is it live or not?
Talks of CL's demise are greatly exaggerated
I'm sick of hearing the whole "this is going to kill CL... this is going to trounce ebay." Hogwash. Seriously, I love Google as y'all know, but -- like any big company -- they have hits and misses. HITS: Search, Advertising, Maps, Gmail. Misses: Orkut, Groups, Reader (so far... but it's admittedly early).
People don't flock to and stay with CL just for the listings. No, it's about uber-simplicity and COMMUNITY. The latter is something Google has never come close to mastering, IMHO, and I don't see it in them (yet). Yahoo gets it to some extent. CL REALLY gets it. Customer service really serves, CL leaders really listen, and the users, nay, MEMBERS eat it up. And that's despite what is, IMHO, a friggin' lousy interface, a rabid and irrational aversion to text advertising, a crappier-than-crap search feature, and so on.
And why do people still use -- and pay heftily -- for Ebay? Hell, Yahoo Auctions are 100% free, right? And I'm sure there are many free alternatives. It's about TRUST (and, to a lesser extent, community).
People (ahem, okay, not a lot of angry Webmasters) TRUST Google. But until Google gets the Community religion (a la flickr, CL, etc.) and customer-service orientation, they're not going to trounce CL and Ebay, nor, IMHO, even make a dent there.
Damn, even *I* am getting sick of the Google hype, and that's saying something :P.
Craigslist
I've never heard of Craigslist so I decided to check it out - I went to their homepage and went to try find "the real homepage" so many times because it's look so much like spam :-)
Recognised the name,
Recognised the name, probably been mentioned at TW before. Took a look and i thought firefox had gone into melt down or the style sheet wasn’t loading, then went back to Google results to make sure i had gone to the right site.
It looks so much like spam God himself could recommend it and i still wouldn’t trust it. I know ugly sells but that’s taking the piss.
SERPS and Objectivity
Since Google has now decided to somewhat take on the world with all their new offerings...one has to wonder....will their algo's be tweaked....to not list the major players (whom they are competing with) as well in their SERPS??
As for CL, ebay, etc...well...I don't think they are at serious risk here...not now anyway....but the reality is..if Google can provide access to everything in one place...and users find the tools as good or better than the rest..some people will be willing to change......although...CL and ebay users are pretty loyal users.
For those not familiar with CL, go here for some info: http://www.craigslist.org/about/pr/factsheet.html
It is a pretty cool story...I believe ebay did acquire a 25% stake in CL last summer.

I think it's creepy
It's like going in and stealing everyone's ideas, so they can run the internet world. I'm not interested in eGoogle or GooglesList or PayGoogle or Googlezon. I like the ideas to remain with the companies who started them. Instead of swiping ideas, Google should either come up with their own or just do search better than they have been. I miss the pre-behemoth Google.
