Google drops Gmail address in UK

Following the problems with Google using Gmail in Germany after a trademark dispute, the UK is another place where users will not see Gmail when storing gigs of dodgy pictures. British users will use Googlemail. Not very catchy...

According to the BBC:

Quote:
Gmail, the free e-mail service run by internet search giant Google, will change its name for new UK users.

Following a trademark dispute the mail account will be renamed Googlemail.

not very catchy no, but heartening to see that sometimes David still beats Goliath - I remember checking the .co.uk domain on the day gmail was launched and wondering how long it would be before Google did a Stelios on them. Thankfully they didn't :)

That was quick!

That was quick! Have i just not noticed the changed logo or has it only recently changed?

I only saw the change

I only saw the change today

I'm in the UK - Just hope I don't lose that nice @gmail extension...

From the bbc...

From Wednesday morning, new users in the UK signing up with the Google service will be given an e-mail address that ends with "@googlemail.com".

German users with this address report that e-mail sent to their username but ending with "@gmail.com" instead of "@googlemail.com" will still arrive at its destination.

The Times today carries an open letter from the company that "holds" the rights to "gmail" in the UK, explaining their point of view in the saga

And the deal that Google baulked at was

Quote:
Google broke off negotiations with us when we indicated that the minimum deal that we could accept, to transfer our entire rights to the trade mark, would be an annual licence at US$500,000 (FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND US DOLLARS) per year (which is the real cost to Google) plus the same amount in advertising credits, to help us to re-brand our service.

I wonder why Google said no? ;)

Well it's not like they

Well it's not like they can't afford it...

Especially considering the revenue they'll be generating through Gmail...
