Just dont tread on the red ones ok?
Story Text:
A little out of our normal sphere, but damn, this is neat. A bio company has developed a way to detect landmines by genetically modifying plants to turn red in the presense of explosives. The firm is called Aresa. Unfortunately their website was built by an idiot, so you can't link to the page about landmines, but im sure you can work it out...

I think they are using frames
though this works
http://www.aresa.dk/landmines.htm
They're definately using
They're definately using frames - in Denmark, if you're not using frames, you're required by law to at least have a spinning logo and a hit counter...
really, it's true.
I have it on good authority that that site was built by "someone that know's about computers..."
open her up
Did anyone take the time to open up her source? No doctype no nothing which tells me it's either a template from the last century or built by the directors best friends nephew.
Ahhhh removing mines
I'll bet the pay's good ;)
ROFLMAO
LMAO ! But seriously, you also need JavaScript navigation. Anyway, an all-flash site will do in stead.
(The company got around an hour of airtime on national TV a half to a full year ago. Afaik, the pay's actually not good, as it's still in the testing stage, and the countries that suffer from landmines are poor)
Right Claus
an hour of airtime on national TV a half to a full year ago
Yeah, I watched that piece too. Was quite amazing what could've been done if they didn't ran into all the political bs they did in Africa. Too bad, I really hope the guys will get some funding and time to develop thier seeds and plants.
I wonder
If in years to come kids are taught not to go near certain plants but the reason why dissapears. Pretty powerful start to a superstition..?
such a great idea
that's awesome - I really admire people who come up with ideas like that - so simple in concept but it can save so many lives if they can get it funder properly and up and running.
presumably the element it detects is not one of the ones which appears in fertiliser :)
Absolutely stunning idea and
Absolutely stunning idea and concept. I tip my hat to the inventors
How are they going to plant
How are they going to plant them? :o
carefuly lol
carefuly lol
It's just seeds they sow;
It's just seeds they sow; too little weight to trigger a mine. But, as far as I recall from that TV documentary, birds needed to be kept away from the seeds.
> birds needed to be kept
birds needed to be kept away from the seeds.
Only to make sure seeds are left to actually grow the plants. The plant can't produce seeds itself - can't reproduce, and it dies in 12 weeks. So it is quite safe. But just like anything that got to do with radio activity scares most people so do genes - even when there is no reason to be scared at all.
