The Register are reporting on the news that Auntie have an answer to that age old internet marketing question:

How much is a domain worth?

Well if you are spending tax payers' money, it is 1999 and you want to own BBC.com, it'll cost USD$375k.
The BBC have repeatedly declined to say how much they have paid for the domain name but thanks to the relatively new Freedom of Information Act the BBC had to comply with recent FOI requests and have told us this story.

Seems like a bargain for the date and time

Altavista.com sold for $3.3 million. Bought by Compaq for its search engine Altavista. It means you no longer had to type in the cumbersome URL www.digital.com/altavista.

AsSeenOnTv.com sold for $5.1 million. Bought for an extortionate sum and now the place to buy all your As Seen On TV products.

"Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way. "

isn't that in their annual report?

Isn't that in their annual report? I seem to recall reading something about that, but perhaps that was just the usage figures?

Just found those:
1,875.8 million page impressions and 48 million users per month. That has got to cost something.

Ah, page 106 of this PDF: 69.2 Million GBP for 2005 - up from 66.7 in 2004.

Spend on bbc.co.uk was higher in 2005 due to online content relating to the coverage of the Olympics and Euro 2004. In addition, the range of community and audience-contributed content increased in the year.

Added: Oops... just saw the ".com" in thread title.

What I wrote is all related to bbc.co.uk

and another TV production Company

refused to pay $120,000 for eurotrash.com - that's how much I offered to sell it to them for after they asked to buy it.

When Rapido didn't like the number, they went down the WIPO route....and lost.

eurotrash.com

Hey, I like this bit

Quote:
Respondent was not aware that the building shown on the web-site was the Channel 4 building

What a coincidence, of all the buildings in the world, it just happened to be the Channel 4 building :-)

You certainly had the full monte on that arbitration.

Seriously

I had no idea - I honestly didn't. It just looked like a cool building picture that I found on the web - can't remember where but it wasn't at Channel 4's website. You should have seen my face when I read the complaint!

Strange but true, it was a total coincidence.

I think you go back to them

Double the price of the original offer for wasting your time! PS Thanks for the kilt recommendation (remember in SEO Roadshow edinburgh?), mines on order!

BTW, did they buy it in the end?

Nope

Like their TV shows, they disappeared.
