Search Engine Ranking Factors
Story Text:

Rand does a bang up job listing a very nice set of SEO variables and their relative importance. It's always nice to review lists like this to refresh the back of your mind on all those important factors. Gives some nice insight as to what a lot of the quality indicators that Andy had recently mentioned might be.

This article contains a large list of the factors that can influence a web document's rank at the major search engines (Yahoo!, MSN, Google & AskJeeves) for a particular term or phrase. Although it is impossible to say for certain which of these items affects which search engine or how important the factors are individually, I've created an estimated ranking importance scale...

Nice job Rand. Great stuff.

Comments

Interesting

I'd love to see how they came to these conclusions, especially since there are claims in there that I'm just not prepared to believe, but it's certainly interesting.

I feel the need to echo what someone wrote in a comment to the post, though (I looked at it yesterday -- for all I know it's already been fixed): AFAIK, it's just wrong to refer to the root of a domain as the "TLD". The top level domain is not the default document of a domain, it's the .com, .net, .co.uk, etc.

Picky, picky --but correct.

Printing...

Nice list. Too bad the ranking icons don't print...

TLD annoying

Everybody's a critic :-) I agree completely. If this is to be a reference document that TLD stuff really detracts.

Once you get into it I'm not sure how helpful this is, though. Cloaking is rated an exceptional detrimental factor (more detrimental than dup content). I would not advise webmasters to prioritize "don't cloak" over "avoid dup content" because the dup content filters will kill them first and frequently in non-obvious ways.

Ditto for positive factors. Several "exceptional" factors are ranked as equivalent but really they are far apart in importance if you consider probability and impact.

Very nice effort and better than most of the stuff out there, but I am not convinced such "comprehensive summations" really contribute that much to the industry. Perhaps it will evolve as a reference document.

It's a nice looking doc, but

It's a nice looking doc, but there are a LOT of very debatable assertions in there.

Still, i suppose it will keep the "i can calculate PR to the 19th decimal place!" crowd busy for a while, and that can't be a bad thing...

I'm trying to contact a few

I'm trying to contact a few top notch folks in SEO to contribute their own comments and vote their own rankings on each factor. Hopefully it will help to balance my personal opinions against everyone else's. I certainly don't pretend to know everything and I'm sure it would be a better document if more folks chipped in.

I'll be e-mailing people individually on this and set up some sort of voting/commenting system that can then be used to make it better.

Thanks for all the advice - particularly about the icons not printing. I'll take care of that pronto.

=>i can calculate PR to the

=>i can calculate PR to the 19th decimal place

You know, in all of the last roadshow (and i'm guessing this applies to the last wits as well) I can truthfully say I did not hear PR mentioned once.

That sounds like a great idea...
