Orkut Becomes Part of the Google Borg
Story Text:

Dave N reports on Orkut .. WTF that if you tried to log into Orkut you get this message

In order to unify our services, we're asking all orkut users to upgrade to a Google Account.

Once you do so, you'll be able to sign in to orkut and numerous other Google services with a single email address and password. If you have any questions, check out our FAQ.

Yes, Orkut has always been a part of Google but that was the old happy do no evil Google not the ravaneous all knowing, all consuming, we want all of your data, google borg we have today.

I never got Orkut

Does anybody use Orkut? I tried it and it seemed like a giant popularity contest. Then later it became so slow it was worthless. I never understood what Orkut did that a good forum could not besides viral marketing.

>>borg

Yeah, its a portal. Same as Yahoo. Orkut is going to be Google's forums, chat and Clubs rolled into one.

I hated it, used it for

I hated it, used it for about 2wks then decided i either

a) was just not 'social' enough to do that

or

b) it was shite

I never worked out which one it was, though i suspect both had a part...

Walled Garden

One thing that always bothered me about Orkut was it was a walled garden. I had to be a member to read stuff and gain any knowledge. I remember lurking at the new WmW for months (reading RC and Brett and just a handful of others talk to each other) and also lurking at SEF before finally posting. I learned a lot and it was all free information. With Orkut you had to be a member of the club, know a secret handshake, and at the end of it it wasn't any better than some Yahoo email groups, and a good deal less relaible.

Performance

Not to mention the performance was garbage. Even if you WANTED to use orkut it was so un-godly sloooooooooooooooooooow. At least they don't allow you to use monster tiled backgrounds like myspace.

All your thoughts are belong to us.

Google Passport?

Now they're taking lessons from Microsoft!

Orkut is going to be Google's forums

OMG well lets hope and pray they put it on a faster server, the amount of errors you used to get or the time it took when trying to access orkut was unreal, sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow is an understatement

Never bothered, it's useless anyway

Never really bothered with Orkut. Somehow I've become a member of LinkedIn in stead, which is the same, I think. I've got lots of people in there that I know but I haven't even bothered connecting to, because I can just as well hook up with them outside that forum.

The thing about these services is that they're basically useless. I mean, think about it - you get in because of somebody you already know, and then you invite some other people you already know. You don't even need it in the first place.

I mean what difference does it make? You still communicate with your network by the same old channels, because you've got their IM's and emails and phone numbers etc anyway, so after a while you just don't bother logging in anymore because, well, there's really no need for it.
