As Google's arrogance grows, the web waits with baited breath for them to take that inevitable misstep. We know it's coming, it can't not come, and I think when it does, the web community will fall upon them like wolves on a wounded stag.
Dan has similar thoughts. Talking about Google's farcical gagging of press and bloggers at it's "secret party" he says:

This restriction against coverage is an utter charade. Google's executives know perfectly well that what is said at this exclusive meeting will leak out. I'm betting they're counting on the leaks, in fact. It's part of the company's belief that it can make all the rules.

Google has plenty of glory days ahead. But as the company goes out of its way to alienate people who once revered its promise and style, it all but guarantees that when the inevitable troubles do occur, it will have fewer friends than it needs.
I couldn't agree more. There are two things about people that you can absolutely count on, right or wrong, all around the world:
- Everyone cheers the underdog
- Everyone wants the hero to fail
- Y! MyWeb

I'd cheer if I could see him
Who is the underdog, though? MSN and Yahoo would take some pretty tight binding to fit that description. And that leaves, who, Gigablast? Clusty? Nutch?
I don't particularly want G to fail, I'd settle for them not fucking it up too badly. And with this non-story, they're just being a bit silly, really, no? Sure, pride before a fall, but this just seems to be running off the pitch with the molehill, to mix some metaphors. Where's the queue of alienated people? I'm getting old, but I can't make that out either.
Sad
it sort of makes me sad in one way, because once upon a time they were a wondeful company with great ideals, but like many they've grown arrogant with success. The mighty always fall, its just a question of when.
Don't hold your breath

Weird...
Seems weird for this to be brought up now (again), on the very heels of Google opening up the lines of communication with webmasters. Hmmmm
