Marissa Mayer on Googlebombing
Story Text:

Google's Marissa Mayer makes a valiant attempt to spin "googlebombing" as the work of merry pranksters out to give good old George W a little tweak on the nose.

Google's search results are generated by computer programs that rank web pages in large part by examining the number and relative popularity of the sites that link to them. By using a practice called googlebombing, however, determined pranksters can occasionally produce odd results. In this case, a number of webmasters use the phrases [failure] and [miserable failure] to describe and link to President Bush's website, thus pushing it to the top of searches for those phrases. We don't condone the practice of googlebombing, or any other action that seeks to affect the integrity of our search results, but we're also reluctant to alter our results by hand in order to prevent such items from showing up. Pranks like this may be distracting to some, but they don't affect the overall quality of our search service, whose objectivity, as always, remains the core of our mission.

so if "pranksters" are able to affect the SERP's explain how it's not affecting the quality again...

I wonder what the LSI engineers think of the relationship between those 2 words ?

Because nobody is actually searching for the phrases that are used as Google bombs. No real people looking for something else, that is.

Would you have ever done a real search using the phrase miserable failure? Of course not.

Don't They Understand?!

Why do they automatically assume that the relationship between George Bush and the word "failure" is the work of pranksters? I'm sure that you would find many people in the world who would agree that George Bush is a miserable failure as president, and that it is quite legitimate that he show up as the number one Google result for this search. I, for one, subscribe to this belief, and believe that the reason that George Bush appears at the top of the list is not because a small group of determined people agree with me, but because the majority of people in the world agree that George Bush is the biggest failure to ever take on the office of president.

I bet the blackhatters don't know that yet

You believe he's showing up number one because the majority of people in the world agree with you?

That's a nifty search engine they got there, kind of a pyscho-kinetic mindreading algorithm thingie. You links folks got it all wrong.

Don't be absurd

I think that he shows up number one because the majority of people in the world agreeing with me is demonstrated by the way the site is talked about and linked on the web.

explain how it's not affecting the quality again...

The algo only tells you what other people are voting for- the popularity of it. Links are votes, remember?

Votes, and truth and reality are unrelated.

Marissa is right.

A antigoogle googlebomging!

Google says Googlebombings are pranks, about what Google thinks. Then I think Google is evil (in spanish malvado) and I think I should start a Googlebombing with these keywords.

So...text link purchases are

So...text link purchases are nothing but pranks? :)
