Within technology industry and beyond, AI seems to be the new buzzword. Gary Marcus, Professor of Psychology at New York University questions if AI is overhyped, in this Op piece.

Marcus claims that even techniques like the deep learning technique that is popular at the moment falls short in several ways, requiring tons of data to 'learn'. Marcus goes on to state that further investment beyond corporate labs are required, since those labs focus on a narrowing set of problems primarily dealing with optimizing advertising. Current academic labs are very small and don't have sufficent funding to drive research forward.
