Massa on What search engines don't want you to know!

I have a secret. A secret that if you had it, your life could improve almost beyond belief. This secret can put a new car in your drive. It could float your new boat on the lake and it could send your kids to law school! This secret could build your company into a respected leader. It could make you the envy of all your friends and maybe even get your mom to actually believe you have a real job! By the time I finish with my own introduction I will impart that secret to you. Sound good? Just keep reading a little further.

I will give you this secret with absolutely no obligation to me whatsoever. I will offer no website to look at or affiliate link to click. That is not to say I'm not selling something. I am. I'm selling an idea. A concept. A perception. If you are still reading, that just shows you are a smart business person. A business person who is aware of risks but understands the value of learning.

No point in trying to get away with not having to do the work by just scrolling to the bottom and getting the secret right away. I've already thought of that and have buried the secret somewhere in the body of this message. If you want more money, a happier spouse living in a bigger house and smarter kids, you just have to keep going to learn the secret. Let's get started shall we.

I always feel a little funny making my own introductions. Somehow I feel oddly unqualified. I suppose it is just my self-defecating manner, (yes I'm aware of the grammatical comedy).

I've been making friends and pissing people off just about equally across the web for about 9 years now. I've been called stupid. I've been accused of being a spammer, and I've been accused of having a big mouth. I've even been called the internet anti-christ. I don't try to defend myself against most of these charges because I'm sure anyone who would say those things about me I've given plenty of evidence to support their case over the years. I have a quote of mine I would like to share as it is important to your taking full advantage of "the Secret".

Small words spoken in truth can sway the minds of nations. But I don't care who you are, keep talking long enough and you're going to say something stupid.

I will try to prove that concept now.

The one thing that my friends and detractors would all agree with though is that Bob is quite a salesman. That is true. I'm proud of that because I don't hold with the popular misconception that you, "have to watch out for him, he's a fast talker". The truth is being a good sales person has very little to do with talking. It has much, much more to do with listening.

You yourself may hold to that perception that salesman have to be guarded against. That they are all smooth talking shysters with the ability to hypnotize you into buying things you don't want or need. If you think that, think about this. You too are a salesman. From the very first time we start crying when the doctor slaps our pink little tushy, we are trying to persuade others to our way of thinking. Throughout every day of your life, in virtually every situation you are either selling or being sold. As I go about the business of this new venture, I will start looking for articles and statements to offer as "proof". There is no need for that now as I know this is a fact. I will take for granted that when you think about it, you will know it too.

So, I am a salesman. Nick has been kind of enough to offer me this opportunity for that reason. You see, I told him one of my pet peeves for a long time now has been the almost incomprehensible waste on the net. Conversions play such a small part of SEM discussions when to my mind, that is ALL that matters.

I'm here to get everyone interested, to better understand the basic components of a sales approach. The advertising/marketing skills needed to generate targeted traffic to our store. The greeting, the importance of stressing benefit over feature and how to tell the difference. The qualifying of the prospect, the overcoming of objections, establishing trust and evaluating competitors.

Think just for a moment about your sales yesterday. Are you satisfied? Did you make as much money as you would have liked? What if you could have made twice that much? Ahhh, we're coming close to the "secret" coming into play. Read just a little further.

Unless you had a conversion ratio of 100%, you could have made more money. Granted that is an extreme statement but it is to illustrate a point. I'm going to guess that if you had even 2 out of every 100 visitors actually take the action you wanted them to take, you are probably making a pretty good web living. Again, think just for a moment about just 2 more people taking that action. Can you visualize having TWICE as good a day yesterday? Would your quality of life go up if your income doubled? If you just knew the secret I know, that is all yours with no more effort than you put in yesterday. Do you want to just double your income or even more? Just keep reading just a little bit more.

So, it's off to work I go. First I want to point to a gentleman who if you don't know of already, you really should get to know. His name is Ammon Johns and his handle is blackknight. You can find him at Cre8asite forums http://www.cre8asiteforums.com/ He posts there most days as he is a moderator. This man is one to listen to when he speaks. He has worked tirelessly for several years at Cre8 a site doing more than just about anyone I know of to show web marketers a different way of looking at their jobs. A more professional way. A more business-like way. He knows the secret. Just ask him.

In fact, all the folks at Cre8asite do a great, great job. I intend to link to them often.

All right, I know I said at the beginning of this post that the secret would not just be at the bottom of the page. Well, think about it, where else would I have put it? Never forget that everyone is wanting you to see things the way THEY want you to see them and that may not always be the same way you want. Always consider the source and think for yourself.

Ready? Are you sure you're ready for THE BIG SECRET SEARCH ENGINES DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW?

Here it is, -------------

you don't need them. One of the biggest problems I see with the net is, the focus of far too many web publishers is misplaced. There should be only one reason to publish web content. To meet a stated objective. Instead, there are billions and billions of documents thrown out there for the sole purpose of trying to get top placements on search engine results.

You don't need search engines. Your clients don't need search engines either. You need sales. You need customers. You need to hit your numbers.

We let ourselves fall into the trap of believing that without a top 10 spot, we just can't survive. That is not true. That is nothing more than propaganda spread by the search engines themselves. There are literally hundreds of places to get free traffic without search engine one. My hope is that I can alter the perception even a little by simply showing how to get more prospects to take the actions we want them to take.

Your first lesson? You've read this far haven't you.

Notice the title and very first sentence. That is the feature, (it is also a hook but we'll leave that for another time). Then the bit about improve your life. That is a benefit to you. The car, the boat, the college, more benefits. Becoming the envy of your friends and making your company respected. These are emotional rewards that validate. The purpose of statements like those are to encourage you to visualize the benefits and see yourself enjoying them. That creates desire. Then the simple, "Just keep reading" . That is a call to action or a close.

Nice opening hook, Bob.

Nice opening hook, Bob. Yeah, I used to be a salesman and know the difference between a hard close, a presumptive close, a reference close, yada, yada... But I have chosen the other path. I have no clients, nor real merchants in a bizarre sort of disconnected way. I don't answer the phone (ask Mackin), and I don't have any employees. I don't really have an office but do tend to hang out in the one provided me by one of my old bricks-world companies. My hobby/interest/GAME pays me and I deal with nothing but my whims. Truth is, I don't worry about conversions --I want traffic, that's it. I've found that if I have traffic, I can make the rest happen (btw, I don't do porn or pharm, either).

At some point i plan to

At some point i plan to write something about the syndication marketing aspects of traffic for my own blog. Maybe some of our stuff will gel together, i hope so, cos that was one HELL of a start!

Thanks for taking this on Bob.

For those that don't know. I've been a major massa fan ever since we first started talking over at SEW in pm - im dead proud that bob will write some stuff here - looking forward to more!

So

The idea then is - stop focusing on getting high SE rankings and re-focus on sales & conversions... right?

But, as SEOs, isn't our job to worry about the SEs and let others focus on the sales & conversions? I'm not saying that if you're a small time webmaster or even on a small team, you shouldn't also worry about those things, but for the purebreds... SEO is the focus, while sales & conversions is part of the ultimate team goal.

Like at McDonalds - the guy who makes french fries is concerned about the quality of the meal, but his primary responsibility is to the fries - "keep your eyes on the fries, fry guy".

It's definitely good advice, but I'm not sure why search engines wouidn't want you to know about it...

This guy is OLDER than dirt

first started talking over at SEW

He was over at SEF in 1998 or earlier.
Back when it was a SIN to take up so much bandwidth.
Bob was a sinner then also...

yeah, i know the history

yeah, i know the history quite well - we talked about that also - i remember the searchking vs google shinanigans, but that's about as far back as i go MrMackin...

Im still a newbie in terms of years on the web heh..

But, as SEOs, isn't our job to worry about the SEs

That's the rub, for many of us we do far more than SEO. That's what Bob get's about Crea8asite - thanks for those kind words Bob.

A really great piece and I too look forward to reading more from you. I remember Bob from the old "debates" at IHY - he always was enlightening ;-)

AIDA

I think there are loads of SEM people who do care about these things so this is bound to be a popular blog :O)

just a bit of healthy cynicism from the cheap seats

it may be Marketing 101 but

needs to be a bit more subtle for most of the Brit market :)

Bob

What I like most about Bob's general postings is his attempts to try and get many less experienced to think around the basics.

Yes! ROI!

It's certainly nice to see this subject matter appearing in a place like this. I can't count the number of times I've seen a forum post about ROI as a goal of search marketing being responded to with a statement like, "That's not the SEO's job, it's for the marketing people to worry about. We're just about getting rankings."

er

I rarely see that exact sentiment Qwerty, I think it's what some people think they see.

The point is that SEO is a part of marketing - some of you guys are talented SEO's and some of you are talented SEM's but being an SEO doesn't necessariy make you an SEM.

Marketing people have been happily getting conversions from sites for years. Just we don't all know how to get a site ranking for 'london hotels' - that's why we want an SEO, not always to redesign the site, sell us a mailing list management service and tell us how to write PPC copy :)

Yup

Gurtie has it right. There are some folks in the business who see traffic as all you need "build the traffic and the profits will come", which is fair enough if that works for them. I have some sites like that. Others have integrated marketing strategies and see seo as one tactic, this is where my clients live. Both need and want to make money, just the emphasis is a little different. Sometimes the traffic issue is more pressing for some posters so perhaps that is why it seems that is all people care about?

Ummm

I've always thought they wanted you to think that. Don't they want sites not built for the SE's?

They Didn't like my joke, so if the web went all Flash you guys would be soooo happy ;)

I didn't wanna read it all...

...but I did!

Nice job, Bob, and good luck in this new venue! :)

I'll be on the lookout for more posts in this section!

Nice to see you here BoB

You haven't changed a bit ;-)

Nice to read this, I had fun and it did help to refocus me on conversions. But I still like traffic.
