Google's Blogger Embarrassment

Source Title:
Blogger Blogs To Be Banned From Blog Search Engines Says Cuban
Story Text:
I'd missed this post by Mark Cuban this morning due to the stupid title, but fortunately Duncan didn't. He essentially says that due to Google's Blogger being the "worst culprit" for spam blogs, or splogs as he puts it (yes, it does make you want to vomit doesn't it? What is it with these utterly stupid plays on words with bloggers? Sheesh) they are likely to be banned at little IceRocket and other blog search engines before long. As if anyone would care...
The point though really, is that Google host one of the spammiest free hosted web solutions on the net - Google, those guys that are continually tweaking Search algorithms to thwart spam. How can Google, of all engines, be party to hosting such large amounts of auto generated shite?
Personally i couldn't care less. I've about as much interest in how many blogs there are, as i do the mating rituals of sea slugs. But it's an interesting paradox, Google - shiny knight of spam fighting, or evil facilitator of the auto-gen blog?

Blogger is by far the worst offender. Google seems to be working hard to adjust their relevancy indexes to exclude splog from having influence on search rankings, but they dont seem to be doing anything more than removing reported splogs. Kind of like going after the zombies one at a time with a shovel. Can we get some help on this Google ? (you can check out weblogs.com to get a feel for just how much splog we are talking about )
Googles problem with splog isnt just a blog search engine issue. Its an end user issue as well. No splog detection algorithms are going to be perfect. Not only do we miss splog, but we take out innocent victims along the way as well.

I had to quote something right? But man, for an intelligent chap, all that "splog" shite, just makes him sound like a knobhead...

Mark Cuban ... is that the biggest cross link network you have ever seen !!!

DaveN

Q: When is crosslinking okay?

A: When your brand is big enough to get away with it.

I can't imagine that could be seen by anyone as "under the radar".

Maybe G is convinced that the *cough* splogs are only clogging up everyone ELSE's results?

splogtastic

well google don't seem to index half the blogger sites, a good portion of the typepad sites and presumably a load of the others are missing too - so I'd say they do have less indexed splogs than most people.

laff @ the crosslink network

laff @ the crosslink network comments - too true. Mark must have a 'free to pass go' card in his pocket, hand delivered of course.

Putting my tinfoil hat on, and it's a big one, anyone ever wonder if goog uses blogger as a 'spam finder tool'? Allow a spammers paradise and watch/see what the spammers do with it? Blogger's so bunged up it makes me wonder why goog let it get so messy.

On another note that's kinda related, the blog spam problem seems to be noticed by WordPress too and there's this weird 'invite' thing in the works (I think? - http://wordpress.com/)

Holy crosslinking Batman!

Holy crosslinking Batman! That is one of the biggest and most blatantly obvious crosslinking I've seen in a long time.

Really doesn't matter

I am not sure how many ppl actually use these "blog search engines" ?

In my case, I get a few thousand reader everyday to my blog and not even 0.5% are from these so called "blog specific engines"

As long as Google and yahoo! are not removing blogspot.com sites, no problem.
