Russia’s Biggest Spammer Brutally Murdered in Apartment
Story Text:

Looks like someone got a bit too pissed off with email spam from russia's largets UCE guy, Vardan Kushnir.

Vardan Kushnir, notorious for sending spam to each and every citizen of Russia who appeared to have an e-mail, was found dead in his Moscow apartment on Sunday, Interfax reported Monday. He died after suffering repeated blows to the head.

Kushnir, 35, headed the English learning centers the Center for American English, the New York English Centre and the Centre for Spoken English, all known to have aggressive Internet advertising policies in which millions of e-mails were sent every day.

There's a grisly lesson in there somewhere...

heh - yes lots of smiles

heh - yes lots of smiles here when we heard this news.

Hmmmmm

I doubt it was directly related to spam... though the attitude of the extreme spammer may have been a contributing factor.

Wikipedi write up

Comprehensive place Wikipedia, not just how to make a bomb, they have this on this guy

He doesn't appear to have had many friends.

Do we smile at people's murders?

He may have been a spammer, a tax fraud and a man with few business ethics - but do we smile when these people are murdered in such a gruesome fashion?

I hope there were other reasons

If it was related to the spam, it's pretty darn scary.

What's next, white hat SE spam supremicists doing the same to black hat spammers?

You'd be surprised at how much violence is tied to the Net

I don't think I've ever seen anyone attempt to document Internet-inspired violence, but I've seen enough anecdotes to know that it happens a great deal more often than people believe. The Russians can be particularly brutal. I heard one guy who fought online scammers in Russia was found dead in his apartment a couple of years ago. The rumor was that organized crime was involved somehow. Perhaps that rumor will resurface with this murder.

In the United States, people have been stalked, burglarized, and murdered over Internet arguments. One 17-year-old kid received a mail bomb that killed him and injured his mother because he flamed people in the news groups.

And I might as well admit that someone once broke into a private community where I lived (electronic gates, etc.) and carved "MIKEY" in a brick outside my kitchen door. They had to have used a power tool to do it. Had I been there at the time, asleep, they could have snuck in and killed me.

A devoted fan?

>carved "MIKEY" in a brick outside my kitchen door

Maybe it was a tribute? Or someone who wanted to um, know you better?

That is pretty scary stuff though. I doubt email spam got the man killed as that seems to have been the least of his vices. But it would be a forceful warning to the other email spammers...

OTOH, I do worry about some people taking "the fight against spam" a little too far. It's one thing to have a deep hatred for murderers, abortionists and drug dealers because of what they do, but yet another to paint a spammer with the same brush.

Yes, we live here in Russia and every net user gets about 10 emails per day from this guy. I imagine you would feel the same if you could trace so much of your spam to one person. Russians also tend to have a very black sense of humour. As Scottie says though spam was the least of his vices, everyone here knows this story has a lot more to it.

Don't know if its cause & effect or not

..but my spam filter (holds 30 days of spam - then drops last day) is dropping rapidly since this happened.

It had been running fairly constantly at about 24,000 per 30 days. Since this event has fallen to 15,000 and still dropping.

Hey ukgimp - no one here

Hey ukgimp - no one here thinks he got mullered for simply sending out spam. Sorry to break the image but Russians are not that brutal. As I wrote above there is obviously much more to this story. More often than not here, it turns out that the victim of a hit was involved in something shady. They have a saying here, much like you do in the UK, play with fire you get burnt.

Not All Spammers Are Teddy Bears

Nots0 difficult when you know spammers who extort, threaten, and generally use similar tactics.

Not all spammers are thugs, I am told ;o) - but not all are teddy bears, either.

Doesn't that pretty much

Doesn't that pretty much describe people in general?

Exactly Nick!

I know of many god-fearing church-goers who are way more unethical than many athiests and agnostics.

Some people are just bad apples whether they are spammers or seemingly upstanding citizens. You never really know what lies underneath!

Doesn't that pretty much describe people in general?

"Doesn't that pretty much describe people in general?"

Er, yes. That's why some of them get murdered (I suspect you've forgotten what this thread is about?)

Update to this story Three

Update to this story Three youths have been arrested, one a 15 yr old girl. The police suspect robbery was the motive.

One of the boys wielded a baseball bat which he used to beat the man to death. The detainees insist Kushnir had invited them to his place himself where he made passes at the girl by the name of Vika. Her friends tried to stop him, then Kushnir grabbed a knife and the young men hit the man with an empty bottle on the head in order to defend themselves.
