Ranking on Google, Easy as 1,2,3

Source Title:
Google Optimization in a Mere Nutshell
Story Text:
Although i find Michael Martinez just a little long winded for my goldfish like attention span, i have come to respect the fact that he know's his stuff, and just to prove me wrong on the long winded point, Michael writes a very short, succinct statement on how to rank in Googe that's well worth a gander...

The algorithm is fairly easy to manipulate. You build up a lot of links. Most people understand that much. But what they don't understand, generally, is that Google distinguishes link popularity from relevance. Relevance is determined first, and it can be established through off-page factors (inbound link anchor text), although it's easier to establish relevance through on-page factors (including using your outbound links to show what you associate your content with) and then reinforce it with inbound links. You don't need nearly as many inbound links as most people believe, for most searches.
Some searches are so hyperoptimized you pretty much have to go with total link building, but those searches are relatively few and far between.

I would add...

that the value of a link is also influenced by the TrustRankTM of the originating site as well. If you only have links from known link whores and your own network, you may suffer the so-called "sandbox effect"

A good start at establishing your own TR pool... who needs it from inbound links?

Dragon said it even better

higher up on that thread:

That is why most SEOs focus on the user, at the end of the day if your site is ranked high, but does not convert, there is no point? You need both in order to be successful, ie: rank high and convert. Therefore focus on your users and the rest will follow

Jill?

Go to that original thread... What the hell kind of answer is that from Jill? That's one of those "Look how witty I am" posts.

Case of disappearing thread

Strange things keep happening in the highrankings forum, or so the people talk. Threads mysteriously disappear, people say, any body more knowledgeable then the moderators, have their thread cut off.

I think that's something you'll have to take up with Jill personally. I suggest you contact her via pm at HR - this isnt the place to go off down a wild tangent on how people run their forums.

thanks.

Thanks Nick for that mild rap on my knuckles, will keep that in mind :-)

theads don't disappear on HR

We rarely remove threads from HRF. Do you have an example of one that is gone?

I do, however, spend a lot of time each night moving threads to their appropriate category as most people just post in the first one they see. So perhaps you're not finding the ones that have moved? (They should automatically redirect, however, so they should be easy to find if you were using the old URL.)

Not trying to be witty

Sorry you didn't like my answer, but it's how I feel, and how I've always felt about that subject.

link relevancy

I had my site drop from page 3 to page 12 after a well intended SEO did some work on the site including adding real estate links to my photography site. Home page and seperate links page.

I am wondering if sudden appearance of these unrelated reciprocal links clusters have been the cause for my dramitc fall in SERPs.

Any thoughts

I'm none too clear, because I've never had to care, but isn't this what some people believe causes Sandboxing? (whether or not it applies only to new domains, I don't know)
