Source Title:
Firefox doubles market share as IE slips
Story Text:
The Register has an article that says IE is losing ground, would you believe, among business users because of - among other things - security.

Janco Associates found IE had 83.7 per cent of the market for this month, down from 84.85 per cent, while Firefox grew from 4.23 per cent to 10.28 per cent.

Firefox is on quite a roll

Separately, Infocraft reported the browser is approaching nearly 50 million downloads, up from February's milestone figure of 25 million,

But the proviso is always there

Janulaitis cautioned that Firefox's reputation for security would likely be eroded as the browser becomes more widely used and hackers increase their attacks

For some real life data

on our main site, see:
http://fantomaster.com/stats/fantomaster_browser-traffic-stats.txt

Would be interesting to compare with others.

(Obviously, browser data may relate directly to visitor demographics. E. g. one would expect the more tech savvy crowd to be biased towards FF whereas the ordinary mouse pusher will probably stick to IE, etc.)

[Update] I omitted to add that this data covers April 1-28.

Further Firefox stats

This Lifehacker article has some interesting stats.

Apparently 64% of LifeHacker users have Firefox and

Quote:
Gizmodo (at time of writing, 30% Firefox) and two other popular technology weblogs, BoingBoing (at time of writing, 38% Firefox) and kottke.org (45% Mozilla.)

We get the data from a few hundred sites here and I would agree with Janco on their findings. One of our largest sites, av. 2500 sessions /day has 6-9% of visitors using FF. This is not a technical subject site so is probably fairly representative of that side of things.

Running total over 6 month period:

MSIE 87.953%
Mozilla 6.076%
msnbot 1.859%
Netscape (compatible) 1.405%

Last Month:

MSIE 85.678%
Mozilla 8.292%
msnbot 1.912%
Netscape (compatible) 1.246%

There is a live update counter..

..never noticed it before but www.spreadfirefox.com has a live update counter for nunber of downloads.

Found it because I was curious about the statement by a "well known forum owner" that "Downloads of FF however - have remained static." !

edit to add: these are skewed by referer spammers faking useragents...

still saturated by IE.

January stats on one of our e-commerce sites - very very much ABC1 'ladies who lunch' home type audience (to the extent that the title dropdown includes 'Lord' and 'Lady' because we had complaints when we omitted it), perfectly internet savvy and happy to shop online;

IE 94.54%
netscape 4.69%
Firefox/Mozilla isn't even showing, Opera is briefly there at under1%

And yes it is cross browser/platform tested.

That's by far the most extreme but most of our sites are still getting 80-90% from IE. I wouldn't stop designing for it just yet :)
