Email more damaging than Cannabis

Source Title:
Emails 'pose threat to IQ'
Story Text:

The Guardian brings results of a survey carried out at King's College, London University which essentially says that...

The distractions of constant emails, text and phone messages are a greater threat to IQ and concentration than taking cannabis

So, it isn't really email by itself, it's more the constant distractions that many of us have to face daily. As far as i have read, the survey does not mention PM and IM, recent post lists, or Google update threads. No mention of blogrolls, pings, trackbacks, comment spam either.

As for Cannabis, well, this article only says that the IQ in the test group had fallen amounting to "more than double the four point mean fall found in studies of cannabis users". It does not specify the source or accuracy of these other studies. So, next time somebody interrupts your concentration with a phone call or email message; either ignore it, or light up a spliff in stead of looking at it :-)

Sorry about pointing something that has already made a slashdot thread, but i this does sound relevant for the people here.

I've always enjoyed a smoke, and never enjoyed email...

How do you test IQ to see if it drops when being interrupted? Is there some kind of IQ meter you plug into somebody's ear?

study

-i've been all over the Institute of Psychiatry's site but i found no marihuana there. Uhm... i could find no information about this study. I did find out that Thai Curry might be good against cancer, though. I wonder if it's just some pothead at the Guardian that has made this up or what..

I would guess that the IQ measurement consists of

  1. letting the test persons complete one or more tests, then
  2. putting the test persons in front of a computer telling them to carry out some tasks while constantly interrupting them with all kinds of unrelated stuff, then
  3. asking them to complete a few tests more

So, imho, while those tests might be labelled "IQ tests" the survey results that you get could be more of a measure of overall concentration/frustration/stress than IQ.

Presumably cannabis tests are carried out the same way - do some tests, get stoned, and then do some tests again. But i can't say as i've never tried any of it... Umh.. didn't inhale, i swear *lol*

I have a friend that I sometimes played video games against. If we played whenever I would always win. Now if he went for a quick smoke then played I could almost never win.

The game in question is MarioKart, the best two player video game ever. Some people like smoking because it actually tunes them in even more.

It is something the Dutch have known for decades mon!

Don't tell my 16 year old daughter that. She's a MarioKart fiend! :)

Where do you sign up

I'd like to sign up to the smoking part of the test. I will smoke as much as they want me to :)

what the study didn't show..

What about the effects of cannabis *and* internet distractions?

Now I know where all those duplicate posts come from ;)

Tired?

Maybe after smoking, people were just tired and didn't feel like doing IQ tests anymore. Hey, it's often how I feel about certain emails. I don't know how people can stand to stay connected with cell phones and text messaging all the time. When I'm not using my cell phone, I turn it off. I never give out the number. I also screen my calls at home - unless it's family or an expected call, I don't answer. Hey, does that raise my IQ, which will allow me to smoke pot and remain in a constant IQ state?

Note: must get the newish Mario Kart game.

Join the club. No cell except for emergencies, never, ever answer teh phone, have my IM permentantly on 'away' and woe and betide anyone who invandes my space dammit! :)

You guys are recluses. Must be all that shit you smoke making you paranoid. I keep my phone on 24/7 (no one calls anyway :() and have time to chat whilst I am sending out a few million spam mails to freik you stone heads out ;)

Smoke is a geeks speed :)

What a bunch of nutcases. Must be the old IT social retardation gene.

Ummm yes I opened the email but I never read it ;-)

I don't smoke, never have, but I'm a bigger recluse than anyone.... cell phone turned off unless I'm USING it goddess forbid; land line mostly unavailable for voice because I'm on dialup - ALL the time; no tv; no newspapers or magazines; no CNN or whatever else passes for news online (Who needs news? If they're going to blow us away tomorrow, what do you think you can do about it today?) I do answer emails but do NOT do any sort of IM.

Now if I could only move to Alaska's North Slope....

>Smoke is a geeks speed :)

Back in the day I always prefered speed :)
Have not done much of either recently though.
Web and reading books is my speed...which is probably even scarier.

>Note: must get the newish Mario Kart game.

I was talking about the original. none will ever match it IMHO

MarioKart

Oh, then I already have that one. I loved that game...even without smoking. And way more than phone calls and email. I wonder if moving my body as if I was really steering my kart around holes in wooden planks damaged my IQ. You know, I can see how smoking would help in video game driving though

stats are evenworse

affiliate stats are an even worse distration. And if you link affiliate commission alerts to email or SMS what is that, brain fry?

:(

yes, the new MKs are terrible..... give me Koopa Troopa!!!

stats

Yeah, affilate stats and forums fry your brain. Both you keep refreshing to see if there is something new. I lived in Asia for 2 years on a smoke tour so my brain is already mashed from Manali hash and Thai grass.
