Webmasterworld takes a trip down Memory Lane

Source Title:
Finding good affiliate niches
Story Text:
This thread from 2002 got posted on WMW font page today. NickW is in there, even, quote "bookmarking the thread for ever".
Some pretty interesting stuff in there. Most striking was the prediction that affiliate marketing would be dead by 2005. Well here we are and what has really changed (apart from the sandbox of course)?
How many more years will it be before the free ride is over?

- Y! MyWeb

Not a mistake...

Just an archive post. 'twas a good thread. There's not a lot of stuff written that withstands the test of time, but some wise thoughts do. Musta been good...Nick claimed it was super hero status worthy ;)

good thread

...and a very good read. It's often interesting to dig back into the archives.

Now that we are in the old threads department, it's actually one year and one month ago Yidaki started the thread Meta Refresh leads to replacement of the target URL... that was around the time that page hijacks started to become common in Google. One year and eight months ago Marcia discovered that the same had happened by accident because of a defunct robots.txt rule at Alltheweb - so, seven months earlier nobody really knew how serious this was going to be.

- and it's been two and a half year since kris posted http://click.fastsearch.com.... This shows instead of my url? - back then it was Lycos that had the problem ...imagine that.

Still a lot of good folks..

Some threads just and justly do stand the test of time.

Just scroll through very quickly. How many nicks do you still recognize...from over the years. I don't think I have to do the count, we all know the names. It's really surprising looking back on a few years or so and seeing the same nicks; That should tell everybody something.

And a look back is good. Tells us where we were then, what we we thinking, and possibly some insight one how we got to where we are now.

Brett's one of the only guys's that has this stuff, kind of like one of the TV entertainment magazines pulling 20-year-old footage out of its vault. I love that he recycles it. Kind of reminds us where we all came from.

And it's all just the basics. It worked then, and -- maybe with a few twists -- it works now.

What was interesting for me was that many thought the SEs would be so far ahead of 2002 by now. In actual fact there have been a few tremors but there has been no earthquake.

And thank your lucky stars for that :)

It was/is a truly great thread - thanks for posting it!

It was not just this thread

Nearly all the threads in 2002 were truly great, tis such a pity things changed.....sigh

Interesting you say that. I see a lot of people who once posted a frequently on WmW and now no longer do. Sad, really.

Although one could argue that the folks who once posted frequently are so busy with their own online work they don't have time to post on WmW.

Perhaps they got scared...

...by the current restrictions.

STT.

Well I look a little stupid...

...After you edit the post;)

I really enjoy goin' back through archives myself and reading when the people whose opinions I highly respect posted more often

I know this is a big part of it for myself and a lot of others. Once you LEARN how to make money on the web, you want to get out there and do it...not necessarily keep learning about it.

I think (hope) that engine is planning to do a weekly archive posting which I think would be fantastic as there truly are some gems from the archives of WmW. Having done A LOT of reading and posting in 2002, I agree that there were some excellent discussions. Dig through and check out all the gold Nick left in the CSS forum alone. The stuff that has stood the test of time is by all the folks that you just see pop in and out now, as they are bustin' their butts to get while the gettin's good;)

community size...

i have to wonder if the size of the community has something to do with it as well. that is, as big as WMW is now, do the oldtimers there post less because of the influx of new people asking the same old questions whereas back in 2k2 the users were closer to the same 'level' of SEO ability?

it'll be interesting to watch how threadwatch scales over time.

No, I think its just the web moving on

Back in 2002, most of the posters here were posting there then, but today the "mass market" at WMW is on Google News, Adwords and AdSense.

The money that can be made is now available to a wider, possibly less technical, group of people

Must've read that thread 100 times

This thread on Building a Business Around Affiliate Programs is kind of a companion to it, and is also a good read.
Drastic links to the 'finding niches' thread from it.

These threads and others like them at wmw are largely responsible for me being sat at home now and
out of the office on my first month officialy freelance.

I have a lot to thank those posters back then for.
