Source Title:
Company Develops Way to Restore Cookies
Story Text:
PIE is the Persistent Identification Element developed by United Virtualities that's intention is to replace the humble Cookie that Jupiter and Nielsen say users are deleting an awful lot of, thwarting tracking and analytic efforts among marketers. The technology is based on Flash Objects, and is causing mixed reactions amongst the marketing community...

United Virtualities calls the product Persistent Identification Element. It taps a separate profile system that's found in Macromedia Inc.'s Flash and that's not generally affected by antispyware programs.
Using the product, when a Web site discovers a cookie missing, it can look for a backup in Flash and restore the cookie.

I have to tell you, I am torn about this. As a marketer, I can see how I'd like to have more information on ads that I run. However, as someone who is annoyed by different flash popups, I don't know that I want to get *more* flash popups floating across my screen because some large ad agency saw found that I had seen other floating flash popups from the cookies they retrieved.

- Y! MyWeb

Been there

You've seen it before: if they should go for it big time, lots of people will develop blockers, obfuscators, cleansing tools or whatever.

And as deleting cookies seems to be a pretty familiar, widespread process these days, even though it took the better part of 10 years to establish, lots of people will probably adopt it much faster this time - at least, probably enough surfers to skew any tracking and profiling effort.

In a potentially chaotic environment like the Web, imposing reproducible structure on a viable and sustainable level of precision is nothing but one huge and painful lost battle.

If that would fit on a t-shirt

Would be a bigger seller.

Not trying to put words in your mouth but, are you saying that the tracking/roi/tracking/roi PPC culture has feet of clay?

How did you guess?

You must be psychic! :-)

Yep - nothing but a bloody cargo cult, IMV.

Mmmmmmmmm... PIE

I great fan of all things flash even though I am a SEO! It’s a great concept - All that good information that will be available to us marketers that will enable us to make the end users experience only better. They shouldn’t be marketing there product as replacement for cookies cause that will instantly give PIE a bad reputation (like cookies) even though cookies aren’t bad in the first place

One can always visit http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager.html and have the nice folks at Macromedia delete all that shit for you....
