BBC reports that the New York local attorney general's office set up a fake yogurt shop in Brooklyn and sought companies to help promote it's online presence.

Only some of the companies approached offered to post fake reviews on sites including Yelp, Google Local and CitySearch.

According to the BBC report the 19 companies who wrote fake reviews will pay a total of $350,000 in penalties.

"By producing fake reviews, these companies violated multiple state laws against false advertising and engaged in illegal and deceptive business practices," the attorney general's office said.
