Jupiter Research goes Under the Hammer

Source Title:
Jupiter Research is up for sale with multiple bidders
Story Text:
Jupiter Research are up for auction according to SVG today - Forrester have refused to say if they're bidding but clearly want the world to know that they are indeed moving to pick up rival analytics firm Jupiter...

Forrester Research said that rival market research company Jupiter Research is up for sale and that competing bids had been submitted.
Brian Kardon, chief strategist and marketing officer at Forrester would not say if Forrester is taking part in the bidding and he said he did not know who was interested in Jupiter. He said Forrester had more than $130m in cash and if it were to make an acquisition it would use cash.

If the research arm of Mecklers empire is up for grabs, what about the Media section and it's properties then?

Forrester Research said?

One of the oldest tricks to put a company you want to buy into play. Announce that a competitor is up for bid and, even though they might not know it, they are now.

Meckler says no...

I know I posted this story, but Alan Meckler has totally scrapped the story in his blog. Is jimbeetle the real insider on this story ;-)

Yes, its a common ploy

Does not mean it is happening in the case of Jupiter, but this is an example from last month a bid for Marks & Spencer in the UK

Quote:
M&S's share price jumped earlier this week when Paulsmeier said it had been working on plans for an MBO since last summer

Quote:
investment adviser Paulsmeier Inc has walked away from backing a proposed managment buy-out of Marks & Spencer, insisting it never planned a bid itself.

Disinformation is part of the game in takeovers, boosting share price, etc

If it smells like a red herring...

I was surprised that silicon valley watcher posted the blurb based only by the one comment by Forrester without any indication that it had tried to contact Jupiter for clarification. That and the convoluted and disingenuous comments by Forrester really made this one stink:

"Jupiter Research is up for sale and that competing bids had been submitted"

"would not say if Forrester is taking part in the bidding"

"did not know who was interested in Jupiter"

"if [Forrester] were to make an acquisition it would use cash"

Smelled like a red herring from the git go.

and I fell for it.
