Quiet out there isn't it....
Well, another weekend with only the hardcore online :)
I've been busy with the redesign today again, wanna see the progress so far? NB: It is NOT complete - but i would appreciate opinions on the direction im headed with it...
In other news...
Bailey had an operation to put in a new ligament in her leg on wednesday. She is expected to make a 100% recovery, but must be on the lead for 6 weeks! - Sheesh, she's half lab half boxer and only 2 and half so you can imagine what she thinks about walking on the lead whilst Sam runs around having fun!
Still, it's not dampened her spirits. Wearing one of those awful collor/hoods to stop her biting out the stitches, and hopping around on 3 legs she's still running to get her toys and wanting to fight sam... Poor girl.
Tell us what you're up to...
You know the drill, talk about whatever you want. Bore the arse off the rest of the Threadwatch boys and girls and tell us what you've been up to this weekend, or what news you have from the week. It's not as if anything else is happening out there ;-)
Nick

Nice - except for
the brilliant lavender sidebar.... something in a deep rust similar to the "welcome to Threadwatch" background would be nicer. IMO of course.
Otherwise, I like the rest of it - less "whiter shade of pale" equals easier on the eyes.
What I've been up to this weekend: trying to wrap css-p around a tabled site for a nat'l non-prof I do (freebie, natch) web design for. Needless to say, it's not going to work yet. There are just too many inconsistencies cross-browser as yet, with IE (like THERE'S a surprise!) being the major hooligan. On top of the rest, this particular site was "implemented" if you want to call it that with DW 4 *sigh*. So I'm down to one table though, and everything styled with external css.... could be worse.
AND I'm collaborating on a module for NWN (Bioware's game) so I've been writing (and playing - can't work out a module without playtime!) on that.
Hope your doggie's okay soon! It's so hard for animals - there's just no way they understand.... same with kids of course, at least when they're too small to get anything but that mum and dad didn't help....
What are you trying to fix?
I am not sure what you are trying to improve. It seems to work fine for me - but if I had an idea what you were trying to achieve - then I could make recommendations, however - as long as you don't put sound in - I think you will probably be on a good track.
I have been sick today and haven't been to bed in a while. It may have to do with the high doses of pseudoephedrine. I want to get better in time for NYC and then a Poker Tournament.
...awful hoods...
I always feel like the other dogs are laughing at them.
Ow My Eyes
I'm with vkaryl on the right column. Go with something a bit more subtle.
I'm not doing much. Got myself addicted to damn internet backgammon and I've got a proposal I need to finish. But I'm seeing what looks to be a very cool Korean film tomorrow.
>>I always feel like the other dogs are laughing at them.
Exactly. We did try her without but she keeps wanting to bite out the stitches...
>acheive
Well, mainly usability - some general enhancements like "back to top" links, and if you check one of the individual pages you'll see that the members website shows up in the post (if it was promoted to the homepage) for example.
Also, the indexes, including the homepage are much simpler - just the name of the author and the date, rather than a load of links at the bottom of the post - no images on the indexes either, they only show up on the main pages..
There's tons of stuff that's been done that you might not notice till you use it :)
Eyes
Im all ears....
here's the background image, if anyone wants to suggest a color then please do - the same red as the target does not work on a large area like that unfortunately...
OK!
I think i've got it! much easier on the eyes, thanks for the help :)
MUCH better
Now can you put a touch of right padding on that layer? The word "more" at the bottom is scraping the edge of the window.
Yeah
Many, many little details and a few big ones to go yet, thanks qwerty...
Im no artist, not by a long shot, so the help in appreciated :)
Back on the topic of dull weekends...
I watched some sci-fi tonight, cant remember the name but it was the first in a series by Joss wheldon, the guy that did buffy (lucky bastard..) - i heard it got pulled from Fox? It was "alright" - enough potential to watch the next one and see where it goes...
New House!
Oh yeah, we also got the papers all signed on our new house. It's even more remote than where we are now :) Nearest neighbor is about 500m away, but that's the ONLY neighbor for 2 or 3 kilometers i think. It sits right on the edge of a big forrest, has a concrete barn where you have an old coal stove that heats all the house and water and a chicken run - heh...!
Oh YES.
SO much better, Nick!
Oooh. Your new house sounds great. Being at forest on a side can certainly make life nice!
[I had to laugh about your dog's name.... not that it's funny THAT way, not at all! But here's the tale (tail?) of "Baileys" at our house: 20 years ago while we were up here building this house, my daughter (still at home and in school at the time) got a kitten. He was the product of a Himalayan daddy and a calico mommy, and turned out JUST GORGEOUS. Cream ground, cocoa and fawn patches, Siamese seal-point mask and points, and those incredibly BLUE eyes.... Daughter didn't name him, waiting for me to come home to do so (says I have a better mind for that than she does to this day) - so I called him "Bailey's Irish Cream", Bailey for short. He died two years ago....
2nd part of this "tail": 8 years ago this summer, my husband decided he'd like another bird dog. Bought a nice little Brit - whose registered name was "Bailey on the Rio Grande"! Well, couldn't have TWO of them in the house, so she got re-nicked "Brandy" - like our old Brit who died in 1990. You couldn't believe it if it didn't happen to you....]
Busy weekend here
Congrats on the new house, Nick. That's awesome!
In between checking forum threads today, we bought a new (used) car! And are packing up for our Washington DC mini vacation in the morning. Will be off line until Tuesday evening. Hope I don't get the shakes!
Jaggies
You need some jaggies sorting on the targets on the righthand section headings - send me a .png if you want and I'll have a play (or creating them on a white background with transparency set to alpha would probably do the trick).
House sounds great, by the way. We're still debating - after years - the pros and cons of rental vs. ownership in mainland Europe.
I hope...
... you test it in IE before going live -- the right menu sits at the bottom (only in the main page, it seems). Not all of us use Firefox, you know, some of us still worry about what see the 90% of Internet population :)
Stupid IE
Any idea what's causing that?
It's an easy enough fix
Suzy tells me it's a 3px bug, but these things are not hard to fix - design in FF, test in IE - i havn't forgotten ALL my css ya know...
float:right
...probably doesn't work as you'd expect it to.
BTW - like the new look. Less clinical, and less clutter. Agree about the jaggies though. Good thing you didn't go for the bloggers' favourite Georgia font (even though it's quite pretty) ;-)
-------------------
Added: change the width of #nav to 24% and it's fine :-)
------------------
Added some more: all weekend, I've been trying to tame an unwilling karate belt. Talk about weekend boredom...
changing width
changing the width works too, but then headers don't fit to where they're suppposed too ;)
I like the new colors and fonts they're more pleasing on the eye.. Nice work Nick, and yes the grey is better than the lavender
I like the new design Nick.
I like the new design Nick. My only suggestion from a usability point would be to add a link to recent posts in addition to the top link you have already added at the bottom of every post. This would eliminate a step for some users. Just my two cents.
Yep
You know adoy, i just did that :)
It's a little tricky though, and is taking some serious hacking for all manner of dull progmatic reasons but i've just managed to do it - i remember when Brett Tabke removed the recent posts link at the bottom of threads, i had a small fit about it :)
It's a very handy feature when you spend a lot of time reading the recent posts list..
And thanks Suzy. For those that didnt know, Suzy actually did the main CSS framework for the site for me, and it's much appreciated!
She's also been bug fixing and doing all kinds of other stuff to help me on this - if you need a CSS expert she's the girl to talk too..
NB: I've not uploaded the changes yet though. The IE right nav issues are done, but the jaggy nav images are not uploaded yet, though mick_g did kindly fix them for me :) Thanks also for the offer stever, it's covered now though, so no worries!
weekend...
...glad to hear Bailey's getting sorted out, sorry it had to be such a drastic fix though. I had a cat who needed it's hind leg pinned, and it was just the most miserable creature for the first week after.
As for my weekend, I was in a production of The Vagina Monologues Friday and Saturday nights, and then stayed up far too late after, and as a result ended up nearly brain-dead during the days.
