Beware - Godaddy Accounts Being Hacked

SEO Training.

Just a General Warning - It appears that Godaddy Accounts are being hacked - mine was hit bad, fortunately I managed to get on the phone and have someone manually do something about it before any damage was done though.

If you Register your Domains with Godaddy - Better Check All is Well

Essentially, i've had somebody elses account details coming up when i go to buy domains - a would be competitor no less - I have no idea if this is isolated to just me of if all accounts are at risk from some inherent security flaw.

This security breach was duplicated by the original agent i spoke to on the phone - so it clearly has nothing to do with me.

When i asked about it, They Put the Phone Down on me

Seems it's hitting a bit of a raw nerve, when i insisted they give me a contact email of a real person that would handle the issue they hung up on me - Way to go Godaddy! - First you put what? Millions of accounts at risk potentially, then you treat the concerned customer this way?

Sheesh...

Time to find a new Registrar i think...

- Y! MyWeb

That is *terrible* customer s

That is *terrible* customer service. Jeez. Right after they spent all that money doing advertising on Superbowl Sunday.

Call Centers

Yeah, it's one thing entirely to find that someone has managed to hack your account, it's another thing alltogether to be treated like a leper when you want to know what's going to happen about it heh...

thanks for the tip Nick

just logged in, and though all is fine, it was asking me to assign a pin for phone-related purposes. Was this introduced previously, or reactionary to what you're describing?

Never seen that..

Not seen that wibble - i'd be wary just for the moment unless you can find mention of it somewhere..

Security
Funny, the arsewipe at the call center puts the phone down on me - i post at threadwatch and the head of security for Godaddy pm's me and gives me his phone number.

Man, what do you have to do to get a little attention when something as serious as this occurs huh? - He hadn't even heard about this and the original girl i spoke to said it had gone "straight to the top" - i post here, publically and now it's worthy of action....

The guy i spoke to was very nice - cant take anything from him in regards to service and concern, but man, the lengths i had to go to to get it!

PIN

The PIN thing's been around for a few months at least - I've been asked for it a few times (I've got about 10 separate accounts there for clients). Logged in to a few accounts this evening, no problems evident at the moment.

Let's face it, people only use GoDaddy for the prices - their site is awful, you have to jump through hoops to avoid buying 10 million add-ons every time you make an order, and their customer service is a joke. Even NetSol are streets ahead and their site is loads better (shame they're so expensive).

all clear here

I'd tend to think it was something more specific to your situation... but the fact that it happened does certainly point to some kind of bug or security hole. Not a happy thought.

Nick, I have had really good

Nick, I have had really good experience with Moniker. I have had a few good chats with the people from Moniker at SES conferences and helped them out with a few things. So yes, you could say I am on the "bribe list" but it dosn't change the fact that these guys are good :)

Godaddy Bug Being Fixed

n/a

I hate godaddy

I have not been impacted by this yet, but I've had too many problems in the past. I've also had some urls stolen from my gandhi account. Moniker is my current preference. They have great phone support.

I 2nd Mikkel's comment

I have a bunch of domains with Moniker, too. I've spoken on the phone with their folks and they were professional and extremely helpful.

Moniker

I too find the Godaddy system to be kiddie-like, but I can't see me moving to Moniker any time soon. They had a free 'win a hundred domains' or the like draw at a conference - put in a card with a use-once-and-throw-away address on it (never been used before or since). They clearly sold/used these addresses as I - and others - were spammed a few days later for a totally unrelated service.

Very impressive stuff.
