Earning Trust & Ranking After Google's Re-ranks the Search Results

Jim Boykin offers a brief synopsis about Google's increasingly aggressive supplemental index what some people have been terming the -950 penalty, based largely off Tedster's comments in this thread. Jim's comment:

I’ve had this picture in my mind of a row of Google servers. data is gathered, and fed to the first computer that ranks the pages based on Pagerank, the next computer then recalculates the rankings based in TrustRank, the next computer reorders the listings based in interconnectivity of the community, the next computer reorders them based on Filters that are applied, then more filters and more reordering…then there’s different datacenters each with a slightly different weights on each prior reordering….and as more data is fed in, and more reorders and filters are applied the more things change….phew!

"data is gathered, and fed

"data is gathered, and fed to the first computer that ranks the pages based on Pagerank"

I'd say

"data is gathered, and fed to the first computer that computes link trust based on patterns of manipulation, PageRank for some links are taken away..."

Turning up that first link analysis dial is all you need for more pages to go supplemental. After all, low trusted links was the biggest reason given by Matt Cutts for the widespread supplemental fallout post Big Daddy.

Goog analysis I would

Good analysis I would say

Having had our main money site go -30 in the last couple of days I would say it is like when your site is sandboxed, your links are -950 or -30 and will not go higher. We have many sites that will not go beyond 30.

Now our mega site that is in 18 languages and was #1 all over the show is now in -30 hell. For me the negative trust factor has been reapplied. So the -950 etc is the negative trust which explains why you go flying down the serps.

Maybe I can coin a phrase here and call it resandboxing.

What pisses me off it is that a sitewide penalty which can severly screw you if you have a brand. Be better if they penalised pages not sites but that is how the algo is.

Of course, it just opens new

Of course, it just opens new cans of worms - such as "authority" Google partners eBay filling up Google SERPs in the UK with what some would see as subdomain spam:

cgi.ebay.co.uk
[keyword].search.ebay
[keyword].listings.ebay
members.ebay
myworld.ebay
pages.ebay
pulse.ebay
search-desc.ebay
search.stores.ebay
stores.ebay
wantitnow.ebay
wantitnow.listings.ebay

And that's per country TLD, with multiple country TLD's in the longtail.

Come on, Google - there's more to user experience than "authority" - remember "relevancy" as well? :)

..

"Relevancy" - Much like Beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

"Authority" - Is always there, telling you what you can do and can not do.
