Reddit Selling Out to the Man
Looks like Conde Nast who acquired Reddit last fall actually expects them to earn their keep, and are turning on the advertising.
We wanted to delay ads until we could debut all the new stuff we're working on, but it's taking longer than expected, and the powers-that-be are getting antsy. So, sometime later this week we'll be flipping the switch to turn a few ads on.
Advertising isn't uncommon on SMO sites, Digg has some really nicely integrated premium publisher adsense, and netscape is banner central. Many of the users on these sites are advertising averse and have adblocking software running, so I question what the return is for the advertisers.

One intesting part
One thing from their blog post that caught my attention was this:
Maybe, maybe not
Many of the users on these sites are advertising averse and have adblocking software running, so I question what the return is for the advertisers.
Until yesterday I was convinced that every internet-savvy person is of course using adblocking software. Turns out that there are people out there who are not (yet) annoyed by ads on a website. Good news for reddit, I guess.
You'd be surprised
If you step outside the techy/webmaster/firefox zealot crowd for a while, you would be surprised at the way actual users think and react to things. It's one thing to fiddle with ad placement, site layouts, article voices, etc. but it's another thing entirely to sit down with a regular person and watch what they do and listen to how they think.
I've found that a large segment of users have come to expect ads and considers them an important part of layout.
Reddit ads
I look forward to doing a post on the contextually chosen ads for Reddit; the ones I randomly picked over a few minutes on Digg earlier in the month proved to be amusing (at least for myself). I really, really hope they think about who their target audience is and just try to get some better targetted advertising in there.
