Ok Viacom and now CBS .. sure this isn't a concerted effort by the dinosaurs to cause problems.

Nobody likes Youtube eh?

...Not like I can't just go to the Late Night website and watch video clips there. lol.

But seriously its amazing that despite its popularity, Google can't cut a deal for YouTube.

Seriously

Did anyone think the first version of a video Napster wouldn't unravel as well?

I'm wondering who it was sitting at Google thought they would just breeze past all those copyright issues?

I'm suspecting YouTube was being given a longer leash by these media companies before Google purchased them simply because YouTube was an up and coming entity and they were probably curious to see how it played out on the internet landscape. Unfortunately, the landscape changed suddenly when Google purchased YouTube as it was now part of the Mtn. View Borg hive ship and the media companies had no choice but to make a power play or be absorbed and they moved fast before resistance was futile.

Luckily for YouTube/Google just about anyone with a digital camera can record video clips and keep pumping junk into the system so there will be no lack of material.

IncrediBILL

LOL! "Pumping Junk into the system"

I couldn't of phrased it better myself!

Other issues

I'm not sure YouTube would be as popular with just original content. There are plenty of sites now that offer you to post videos.

@IncrediBILL - exactly, it never ceases to amaze me the amount of stuff out there that is made popular, turned into big business and legalities of it are totally ignored.

Does it matter?

YouTube is real slow to take down copyright materials and you can still find tons of Viacom and CBS clips online.

You're right IncrediBILL there is and will always be an incredible amount of crap out there. That being said it is through these sites that user generated visual media has the capability to reach the online masses...given enough time.

The time is not far off where all "T.V." watching will be done through internet "channels". It's not too far of a stretch to believe that in the next couple to few years you will be able to shoot a short video, post it and then go and tell your friends and folks to go watch your channel or to go to a channel and watch your show just like you pull up your fav shows now. Already there are some user generated shows that are impressive such as Star Trek New Voyages.
