Chinese Proxy?
Ok, so they might actually be a chinese proxy service - question is, how do I, and all the other sites feel about that? For my part im not sure just yet, gotta give it a bit of time to digest...

Seems like they are a Chinese proxy service that filters sites for culturally or politically objectionable materials using a html proxy server.
Far East sites stealing content
I had problems with one of these guys nicking photos. Incredible number of views a day.
I put a porn photo on the URL and they stopped using my site in a few hours. Much more effective than trying to correspond with them.
Mind you I did get a lot of funny Chinese emails for the next few weeks.Never could get a translation.
Just removes flash/java
If you are a network station owner, and do not want your websites filtered and visited, You can apply to cancel .

Yep.
We've had a number of members talking about it as well. Seems to be doing the traps around the forums. I am sure there are a batch of C&Ds going out.
AltaVista is a lot worse!
AV has been doing just about the same for some time - and in fact, it is even a lot worse. Take a look at this copy of this page:
http://world.altavista.com/urltrurl?lp=en_en&trurl=http://www.threadwatch.org/node/1194#comment
Look at the parameter "lp=en_en" - so let's try with a spanish translation :)

I don't know spannish well, but I doubt the translation is much good :)
Og yes and by the way, Google DO index such pages! Wonder what they do when they identify the duplicates. Do you think they keep YOUR site or AVs? :)
I send out a full report with documentation on this last year to a number of large US brands I work for and recomended them to take actions. I am not sure if they did yet.
Hehe
I did some very specific searches today and even found MSN cache pages showing up in the MSN listings. Qe? Imagine if they get spidered by other engines.
This whole duplicate pages situation needs some serious thought on the part of the engines.
bloody hell...
It's one thing for AV to provide a translation service but to copy my pages full scale like that? - this raises the google cache issue also...
can't imagine it does any good
you can stay within their domain and surf all the rewritten external links ~ and what happens to login details?
btw I see paypal was mentioned I just tried it and a bank and got an ad covered (with adsense) landing page?
don't know what it all means either.. but it's just not sitting right

Maybe I am a pragmatist....
.. but think about how you can utilise functionality like that.
The reality is that China restricts views to sites it doesn't like. Anti censorship and pro censorship sites have been around for ever and web based proxies are a tool for both. They are NOT going to go away. What is slightly different about this one is they use subdomains rather than a query string to get the base host name etc. This makes it MUCH easier for the end users.
Think how you can benefit from a service such as this.
I have and that's why I have never mentioned the 1bu.com site for the long period of time I've been aware of it :D

I don't understand how they're doing it, but it's all being done automatically - it's updating immediately, as if they have direct access to the database (or else they have a hell of a lot of busy spiders).
I thought for a moment the server might have been compromised, but they have a full listing for WMW as well and all the other sites I've looked at, so lawd knows how they're doing it. I'm almost tempted to think there's an exploit in PHP that allows a third party to access data directly - but even then, I'm not sure that would account for the scale of this, especially not the copying of Microsoft's site.

That doesn't make sense - tehy've got Platinax:
http://www.platinax.co.uk.1bu.com/
I figure that must mean it's using a forwarding service/URL masking. They're not recreating the site on their own servers - they're simply forwarding sites via subdomains.
Thank goodness for that - I was becoming very paranoid about security issues then. :)
Okay, Jason - how do the duplicated URLs help? Just a case of a second set of IPs for backlinks?
Also, is this a dissident movement thing to avoid government (and search engine) censoring of info into China?

compare

and that will show you what to ban if you want to stop them accessing your site but I'd also add in the output from an NSLookup on 1bu.com

There are a multitude of ways of using a service like this to your benefit and I'd have to be extremely drunk to let them slip. If enough cajoling is done I might open my gob but at the moment, it is staying shut.
I've given a quite a few clues above though :)

That's the one - I'll watch out for your travelling group, and see if any of your sirens will sing a little song about best practices with proxies. ;)
Just thunkin' aloud
If you blog spam with the proxied version link..then would the bloggers blame the chinese while sending a trickle of traffic to a working mirror of your product pages ..? >;O) Only problem is you will be increasing link popularity to their copy .. unless you use nofollow ..

Thanks billto - and welcome to Threadwatch...
That's good to know, i wont be removing mine. On thinking about it I dont see any harm in it unless you are showing advertising on those pages of course..
thanks again..
According to some...
...that setfilter thing doesn't work though. Blocking the IPs will.
Please note that there could be other IPs involved, as the post above and others on various forums show.
Is it true..
.. if you fill out a DCMA thingy with Google you get a PR4 link from Chilling Effects? How many of these types of "services" are there out there? Could be a good source of links ;O)
Of course including...
...the links to the letter for those who don't know how to go about it. Great SEO, this... Turn a problem into a benefit. I admire that skill.

Glad you guys are starting to think of some of the benefits of sites like this. :)
I suggest you think of ways to defeat duplicate content as well. Unless you're thinking of undertaking some redirect jacking. Dave, 302 won't work mate as you don't control the server but client side redirection will!

So I linked in my forum to show how proxies were using my site content - but now the 1bu versions of my pages rank where my original pages used to. Looks like I'm getting filtered out instead of them.

Well if the whole point is the Chinese are trying to censor the internet and only show approved websites. Which just pisses me off to no end. I would think if you can redirect them to say a free Tibet or a commies suck website they would remove you from there right quick. If enough people did it maybe they would stop this silliness. I like these SEO work arounds though.

For sale...
...anyone got 2k$ to spare for the domain or 80k$ for the lot??? (See for example post #43) :-]
Then again maybe it's not REALLY for sale ("that cheap?" - hehe there we were thinking it was expensive, not true?)...
All sorts of kapitalist tricks going on in that thread - LOL.
so how can i ban them?
Anyone seen a post with details?
Not that I can find right now, claus
but I just went to the page billto listed, and regardless it was all ?s to me, entered what I could figure of the info they wanted. My sites were out of there (404 not found with 1bu added on) the following day....
Can be very easy to cancel by oneself
http://www.1bu.com/setfilter/set.asp
Yes, billto -
It was not particularly difficult, and I for one appreciate that you've provided such a function.
thx
thanks :-)
It seems to be returning a regular 404, at least in the example provided.
It also seems that disabling requires a special text file on your server, like:
example.com/disable1bu.txt
I don't mind the altavista translation service.
Now I can get my entire site in chinese, spanish and french.
