Alexa Toolbar Losing Users
Alexa Toolbar use in the US has decline from 36.91% last year to 14.28% as of now. In fact according to the Alexa Blog it’s losing users in just about every country except Taiwan. The reasons range from users getting Firefox and using the Search Status Toolbar to it’s privacy concerns.

On the contrary
Alexa Toolbar usage in the US has not declined at all. As the article states:
What?
Example...
100 users in US, 100 users elsewhere in the world. 50% are US users.
Years later...
100 users in US, 400 users elswhere in the world. 20% are US users.
% of US users falls (from 50% TO 20%) NOT toolbar users in US (still 100)
Don't let the facts get in the way of a headline though :)
It's an understandable
It's an understandable mistake. When Hitwise published portfolio share of Google properties (e.g. what % of accesses to Google are search vs. mail vs. maps), a lot of people mistook that for market share.
Search Status
Search Status reports the same data to Alexa as the Alexa Toolbar. They are still getting the data, just through a much more convenient toolbar.
I had problems with the Compete toolbar when I installed it, so it was quickly removed. In addition their data isn't very in depth, and is restricted to US IPs.
