..think before you blog
The BBC reports an Edinburgh man (who worked for Waterstones, a large UK chain of booksellers) has lost his job over comments made about his employer in a blog.
Mr Gordon went on to say that he would occasionally mention his work life online, coining phrases such as "Bastardstone's" and referring to his manager as "Evil Boss".
if I had wished to do that then I would have been running less satirical and far more biting comments on a rather more regular basis, rather than commenting from time to time about a bad day at work, a grumpy manager or the like.
He is apparently currently appealing his dismissal
Your employer could be reading your blog now. Happily, apart from the wife, I do not have an employer.

Mayhem
Thanks for filing this under mayhem and stupid threads cornwall, i honestly can't beleive some of the nonsense im seeing out there about bloggers being fired.
They're squealing like piglets because suddenly, bad mouthing the BOSS and putting the company they WORK for in a bad light is getting them into hot water...
Shit, what drugs are these morons on? It's not difficult to understand surely? Who the hell said that just cos you can throw up a website you suddenly get exempted from the normal laws, rules and guidelines that the rest of the employed masses have to abide to?
it really is a bit of a joke.
And here's the biggest joke of all - A blogger bill or rights? OMFG put those mushrooms down junior!
I really lose patients with all this blog crap i keep seeing all over the net - the last straw was watching calacanis play journalist at CES - running round with a mic - ah man.. im going to have to have a cup of tea and take a deep breath :) maybe i'll get some time to put my thoughts in order and write them down properly later or over the weekend hehe...
he's just been on Radio 4
Just heard the guy in question defend his actions very eloquently on Radio 4.
He didn't name individuals names and seems to have done the thing as a 'Dilbert' style satirical thing.
According to him, he wasn't given any warning - just fired.
Seems a little harsh - he didn't sound like a fool and had worked there for 10 years without a blemish.
Foolish maybe, warning perhaps in order, instant dismissal is surely a little OTT.
Looks like Waterstones have shot themselves in the foot by making this into a headline story instead of dealing with it in a more subtle manner.
Heavy handed
Yeah, it does seem a might heavy handed 4eyes - in this guys case it seems im quite wrong :) what prompted my little tirade is a whole truckload of the most ridiculous stuff out there in blogland - like that laughable "bill of rights" linked above :)
I don't know the details of t
I don't know the details of the case so I have no idea if the guy should have been fired or not but I tell you that if I found out that one of my employees was spending he's free time embarrising or making jokes about me or my company he would have to find another place to work very soon. I am very loyal to people I employ and I do, excuse me, requeire the same from them. This has nothing with blogging to do - it has to with comon decency.
4eyes, you always were a leftist.
Hell, I'd nail the sumbitch to a sign post down in the business district. Maybe hang a placard on his neck.
Mikkel - In a small organisation you are right...
However once an organisation realises a certain critical mass there is no personal loyalty one way or the other.
To allow no room for dissention within the ranks leads to a culture of fear and creates situations which can be horrendous.
37 yo pathetic
The guy should know better, you might have given him a quick slap @ 17 but 37!!!!
Check out this moron http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4170083.stm ;) You'd think their advisers would know better. But then again the bloodline must be must put Adolf at Great great grandaddy status!
Lest he go unrewarded..
This is his blog seems he had a busy day yesterday, radio interviews, photographers camped on his doorstep.
I never realised till I saw the original article on him getting fired, that upsetting your employer and getting fired was an occupational hazzard among bloggers.
There was quite a well publicised case of a Delta Airlines employee (female), the self styled "Queen of the Skies", last October the BBC reported
This is just an excuse to post the photographs that got her fired but there is also a long guestbook on the page, with corresponents split fairly evenly between "they were right to fire you" and "what nasty people Delta Airlines are"
Bottom line to me is, whatever the rights and wrongs, a big company gets a lot of negative publicity from actions like these.
pics
>excuse
If you hadn't have posted a link cornwall, i would have :)
Again i see that one as a case of the company talking to her first, im sure she would have been sensible enough to see that you just can't do that kind of thing if someone had pointed it out to her.
Were it my airline, i would have funded the publicity it generated but i can see why they were not amused....
hey,steady on RC
hey,steady on RC
I am not a leftist, I am an agressive crap-buddhist anarchist (at least today)
If he had worked for me and trashed me off, I would have shoved his computer up his arse and put him in charge of the photocopier - sacking him wouldn't hurt half as much as keeping him employed 'painfully'
Point is, the company don't appear to have followed correct procedures for the UK (if I understand correctly).
On that basis he would probably win his appeal.
But mostly I am amazed at Waterstones ability to shoot themselves in the foot - I mean, who the **** had even heard of this blog before they sacked him - now its on National Radio and more.
