Social Network Analysis Software Goes Open Source

I'm no programmer - but this sounds like a pretty cool tool to experiment with if you are.

Quote:
libSNA is an open-source library for Social Network Analysis, licensed under the LGPL. This library is under active development by Abe Usher in hopes that it will serve as a catalyst for improving the field of Social Network Analysis.

Quote:
While completing my graduate studies at George Mason University, I researched how to quantify virtual communities of interest on the Web. The foundation of my research methodology was applying social network analysis tools against a corpus of over 100,000 emails and USENET messages

I used tools such as UCINET, Pajek, and Graphviz to try to identify cohesive subgroups and key community thought leaders. The process was very frustrating because most SNA tools don't scale well and are quite difficult to integrate with unstructured/semi-structured data sources.

With continued growth in the World Wide Web and the explosion of social networking activities such as MySpace, interest in the art and science of SNA is at an all time high

libSNA is my contribution to social scientists and software developers who seek to "grok the network."

The world takes one step closer to a Semantic Web

I really can't thank you developers out there enough for choosing to release these groundbreaking tools via open source. I'll be sure to keep you in my thoughts as I lay on a combined pile of money, exotic liquors and young, beautiful women after I'm done using code from various projects to make a unified application that I charge exorbitant fees to use.

Seriously. Open source technology. Love it.

SOunds interesting, but I wish there was a demo or some screenshots of it in action so we can see what it actually does before taking the time to integrate it.
