NY Times Integrates Social Media Functionality
In a somewhat surprising development, Techcrunch revealed this morning that The NY Times has decided to integrate social media links to Digg, Newsvine and Facebook into a majority of their online articles, under the "Share" link.
It's interesting to see that over the years, the NY Times (as I would imagine other news sources) has begrudgingly accepted the fact that there is a benefit to information being freely distributed online.

Why is this surprising?
With the About.com acquisition, they picked up perhaps the best inhouse SEO out there, and have done an exemplary job of making all their properties SEO friendly ever since. Of all the major media companies, the NYT is the one that has been working search most intelligently. That they've picked up on social site marketing as well just fits the pattern.
