Google: We Buy Our Own Dog Food Retail
In response to recent reports of Google dominating their own AdWords ads, Google said they buy their own dog food retail:
As does any advertiser, we aim to give our campaigns a budget which is in line with their value to us in terms of the increased traffic we might see. We actively monitor and manage the success of our ads by adjusting ad copy, keywords, bids, and so forth in the same way any advertiser who is concerned with their account performance would.

I dont believe
Google are manipulating their paid search results to rank. But its not really a level playing field is it?!
What constraints are there on return when they can bid as high as they want and it will just go back into the company..
Matt has a few comments on it -

does this mean
that they employ people and prevent them from knowing how their systems work then? Inside knowledge of knowing how things work gives a rather significant advantage over other advertisers me thinks. How many people know what weighting is given for each of the QS factors? Im willing to bet they all know exactly how to structure things.
Nice conservative position here on a London Maps Search
Map doesnt even center in on what I searched for - I declare that not worthy of top spot as the ASK result gets me to London map quicker. Google should pay $10 and lose their position. :)
....good point
Although I am not convinced that many of the Google people I speak to these days are really clued up to that level either.
Mind you, they don't need to be experts, they can pay $10 a click...! Just whack up the max cpc and rank.
Well put, magicdan
It's bad enough they even come and talk to your clients directly to take your business. There's the implied notion they can do it better because, Hey!, they're Google!
But if it's their game and they want to rank on queries that directly effect Google, it's kind of hard to blame them if they did. If I owned a baseball team I'd expect the stadium to promote my team.
C'mon guys, they say the
C'mon guys, they say the truth. You would all see it on your own if you would have landing pages on domain with PR 9 or 10 and gazillion backlinks. QS algo must be having great time when evaluating these landing pages ;)).
Not to worry
Given what I've seen the few times I've let the folks at Google 'optimize' my campaigns I don't think there's much to worry about if you're competing against them. Personally I'd love it if my competitors had Google running their adwords campaigns.

I thought that was funny.
Gotta love sloppiness from the company that painstakingly self-audits the clicks they charge for :-)
