Danny Sullivan Launches a New Conference

Danny Sullivan who's currently at SES Chicago has announced a new Conference coming in 2007 Search Marketing Expo

Search Marketing Expo -- SMX as we're also calling it -- will have its first event in Seattle on June 4 & 5th 2007at the Bell Harbor Conference center. I'm especially aiming the inaugural event toward the intermediate to advanced search marketer.

Good for you Danny!

Good luck Danny

Ahh I wish I could make it but bad timing for me :( But I am sure it will be a huge success!

Seattle in June

I'm there !!

No room for third place

No room for third place and that's what SEW is going to be with PubCon & SMX coming. People actually have to spend some time at home working.

One of the 3 will die, and we all know which on that will be :)

Barry's Coments

Barry was livebloging at SES and the incisive people just got wind of it.

Side note: I think the Incisive people (one named Tim Walsh) are sitting on my left talking about Danny's announcement about starting a new conference at SearchEngineLand.com. Yup, they are reading on their phones about Third Door Media site.

Side Note: Incisive people just walked out to talk more.

If Mackins there

then so am I.

Great to see

and what I was hoping for.

Nice that it's a 2 day event too to start.

Like PubCon early days

If anybody ever wanted a smaller more intimate setting where you could get to know others, this is probably going to be it. Being the first conference and only being a couple of days, I'm sure it will be more like the ole PubCon than SES. Much more face to face time with people you know or would like to get to know.

Guess I'll finally get up to Seattle...

I wish Third Door Media all the success in the world!

Yes, Good Luck to Danny and

Yes, Good Luck to Danny and the team.

if Mackin & NFFC are there

then it's already a winner. I'm there, too.

I'm in!

I'm in!

Can anyone tell me what value the average website owner is going to get for their money at this SEM ‘conference’?

Is there going to be any new or secret search marketing ideas or technologies presented at this ‘conference’ that might make it worth the cost for the average website owner to attend?

It seems to me that at these ‘conferences’ you pay your big pile money and all you get is a sales pitch for and from a few certain SEM companies. Getting people to pay you so you can give them a sales pitch is truly brilliant!

I don’t know if I am right or not, but it sure seems to me that spending the kind of money that is required to attend these programs just so you can try to meet someone that may or may not even be able to answer your questions is a huge waste of cash for the average webmaster.

Of course, like I said, who knows maybe I am all wrong and everyone that attends this ‘conference’ or others like it, are going to get all the information they need to make millions in profits this year...

It's all in what you make of it

Yeah there are lots of sales pitches and yeah there is going to be a lot of info you already know BUT for me if I can get one or two eye-openers its worth it plus the sessions are secondary to the actual networking and idea exchanges in the bar.

LOL, you go to the wrong conferences...

Details are a bit sparse right now, of course, but if Danny can get the attendee (speaker?) list reading like the one in this thread alone, it'll be worth triple what he asks for it. At least

Last time I remeber seeing all those guys together in one place would be Irvine... possibly Edinburgh. It'd be worth it to sit at the bar with them, I promise you that

>> get all the information they need to make millions in profits this year...

If you talk to the right people, and LISTEN, yup, damn straight

that would be Edinburgh (I think)

The word is given. This is also to be an official UNofficial gathering of the SEO faithful.

100% gonna be there

Edinburgh Roadshow and early Pubcons were so much better than current events.

I really hope that SMX has the same spirit as the early days.

..

I'm gonna try to make this one... just need to get a new credit card first. Scotland is a pretty fantastic place too.

Seattle, eh?

Haha, my AIM is already red hot with US guys trying to pursuade me that Seattle is cool. With Danny at the end of the table, Mackin, NFFC and RC confirming, I really don't see any way out but turning up :)

Cudos to Danny! ..for trying to top the SEO event of the year ;)

So after you pay your money to get a bunch of sales pitches... you have to go to the bar and wait till someone gets sloppy drunk enough to ‘spill the beans’... Ya sounds great, except I don’t drink and I don’t like being around people that are drinking and I make it a habit not to trust my business to advice from people who’s brains are fogged with alcohol when they give the advice.

Have fun you all, Im sure everyone that attends is gonna get some real value for their money... LOL

mostly we

compare notes as to who can be trusted and who's an asshole. Assholes are never in short supply but vetting a good truly good contact takes time & money and the least expensive place to do that is at good conferences.

> compare notes as to who

> compare notes as to who can be trusted and who's an asshole.

I wonder which I would be? LOL

I know most of you guys, more or less. For years. Edinburgh was a bit far for me (but I really appreciated the invite), and it's a little hard to walk away from the business for a few days. But I'm seriously going to consider it.

>which I would be

Already checked. You get to sit with Mackin.

..

I don't think you need to compare notes on me. I am a huge asshole, just ask anyone... and if I were you, I would not trust me either, you never know when I might publish all those "secrets" for free... LOL

>> you have to go to the

>> you have to go to the bar and wait till someone gets sloppy drunk enough to ‘spill the beans’.

No, generally people will be fairly open simply because you're present in person, rather than a nick on a forum. The alcohol is fairly secondary

>> I don’t drink and I don’t like being around people that are drinking

Um, it's not exactly high school chugging, with the express intention of getting wasted. It's a pleasant, adult way of relaxing and bonding with your peers. No-ones going to point and laugh if you stick to soft drinks. Indeed, search engine reps rarely drink more than Sprite, and everyone still wants to talk to them...

>> I make it a habit not to trust my business to advice from people who’s brains are fogged with alcohol when they give the advice.

In this case, that would probably be your loss. I'd recommend you try it before making a final judgement

sloppy drunk

>>>you have to go to the bar and wait till someone gets sloppy drunk enough

My IM list includes some of the greatest minds in SEO, most of whom I have had the privilege of getting sloppy drunk with. My IM list is one of the most valuable assets my business has, and on a personal level I have met people that I would go through a wall for.

>>>Have fun you all, Im sure everyone that attends is gonna get some real value for their money... LOL

Blinders.

June 4 & 5

is a Monday/Tueday. Hmmm, the private pre-conference gatherings will begin on Friday, then?

Wow. This thing is getting

Wow. This thing is getting longer -- but my husband advised me that I should consider it even more seriously.

No Sprite for me, but a pretty serious coffee jones.

I guess this means I have to get a laptop.

I almost have tears in my eyes. The old crowd is back!

< added later > OK this is really funny. I was so excited when I read this and bouncing around so much on my ergonomic big ball 'chair' that the plug came out, my ball deflated and I landed butt flat on the ground. I'm such a dork. *laugh*

Venue

My initial reaction was that the location was a bit odd. But it's like 2 hours from Vancouver. So this is actually great for us Canadians. Inexpensive/quick flight to Vancouver and a rental car drive across the border. It's going to be a great conference, and cheap as well.

Now if he had the decency to hold this in the winter I could drop an extra day or two on and get in some British Columbia skiing as well :). Guess I'll have to check out the fishing that time of year instead.

Note to the conference folks

Maybe I'm stupid (everyone crowd on that one I'm sure :) ) but I can't seem to sign up on the site for email notices for the conference. I get a feedburner error.

Nope you're not

The feed does not have subscriptions by email enabled

You didn't disprove my hypothesis though.

Actually

The one at the top works - it's the one towards the bottom that doesn't...

somebody go wake up 4eyes

see if he can put seattle on his busy schedule

Goddam it - I swore I would

Goddam it - I swore I would never do an thrombosis flight again, but this looks like it might force me to risk it.

The important speakers will be in the bar, and if I can swing it, so will I.

Whoohoo - game on!

ring the UK cowbell, 4eyes

round up the usual suspects ...Callum? Caine? Sugarkane?

The bell is ringing, Bob :)

The bell is ringing
:)

wow

I was planning on going already, but this makes it sweeter:

I know most of you guys, more or less. For years. Edinburgh was a bit far for me (but I really appreciated the invite), and it's a little hard to walk away from the business for a few days. But I'm seriously going to consider it.

Holy hell...

...the gang's all here already! I'm in. :-)

I'm not Rand

but I'm a full time SEO in Seattle, so ignoring the risk of breaking up the old boys love fest that is this thread, I'll be there.

I take a slightly different approach... I find there are some people who land in the middle, somewhere between asshole and spit buddy. Not that I actively label anyone.

Come to Seattle and have fun. It's a great city.

I'll buy

for the first hour or so if I can sit at the bar with these guys - screw the actual conference.

Bah Humbug! When are some of the big conferences gonna come down under?!?!?

Grumble Grumble.

Timing

Man I can't believe I missed the timing, Danny is June 4th and 5th. SES toronto is the 12th and 13th and Miami is the 18th and 19th.

add me to the listPubCon®

>SEW just got decapitated

That happened when they didn't negotiate a non-compete with Danny. What SEW does have is the past attendee registration data for large corporate staffs as well as SME's (particularly the ME's). I don't think it will take long for the large enterprises to migrate but the SME's might be much slower at catching on. We'll see.

As for the tipping point, IMO, there are 2 wild cards that the current owners of SEW either forgot or underestimated;

#1 - Among surface-dwellers the 'brandname nicks' who generally make up the resource pool of available session speakers and moderators there has been a VERY loosely formed, but also very active, virtual confederation for over 10 years now. It was (is?) a very small niche industry and, for lack of a better description, the good-ol-boy network still rules. Other than their own business interests they have little to tie them to any particular conference. In short, they can/did/will move easily to the perceived high ground.

#2 - The SEO Underground.

That's what I mean, rc -

That's what I mean, rc - losing Danny is bad enough, but it looks like a wholesale movement of the SEO's to him who would front the conference. Not really surprising, but interesting times.

Wow

Been away from the boards for a while due to both techno and, hmmm, biological difficulties (the perfect storm), and get back just in time to hear all of this great news.

Only Danny knows what he has in mind for the program, but the marquee names above hanging in the bar are enough for me.

Seattle in June, do we wear ponchos?

Bring Rain Gear

>>do we wear ponchos?

I'll be in Nautica Gear. Ruth Ann hates it.

Can't find good picture.

I like that. Could hardly be

I like that. Could hardly be brighter. :)

Mackin -- the rubber duckie.

Fishing anyone?

Since it's right on the coast, I'd be interested in doing some charter fishing. Might also consider fishing around Vancouver on the Canadian side as well (the fish are politer over there).

Good on Danny - we'll try

Good on Danny - we'll try and make it from Russia :)

This is gonna be fun...

...count me in. Fishing sounds like a great idea wheel.

How about whale-watching? :)

How about whale-watching? :)

New conference sounds great...

If I can swing it I'll be there. My oldest kid just moved to Seattle so all the better. Congrats Danny on the new conference.

I'm Down For Whale Watching!

As someone who never saw Seals in their natural habitat until I moved to California, I'd totally love to go whale watching, Brian.

BTW: So basically what we are looking at here on this thread is: The ThreadWatchers Guides to Search Marketing Expo '07 (or "SEX", as John Andrews calls it)

Fishing sounds like a great

Fishing sounds like a great idea wheel.

If you're a baseball fan, you'll surely be able to get great seats to a game at Safeco Field. The Mariners oughtta be out of it by then. :)

Seems like the place to be..

No way I can pass this up. Just a quick 4 hr drive and I will be there. Gonna be nice to see more of the old schoolers again.

>>Seattle in June, do we wear ponchos?

Generally speaking May-September is beautiful in Seattle. Usually not that much rain, nice sunny days, low humidity, temps in the 70s-80s.

Phew Never Bin to Seattle

Could be my first trip! looking forward to seeing you Guys again already!
